Utes make their way down to Tucson for two-day championship event

The Utah track & field team will head to Tucson, Ariz., this Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12, to compete in the 2019 Pac-12 Conference Outdoor Championships. The meet will take place at Drachman Stadium on the University of Arizona campus.

UTAH NOTES
• The majority of Utah's squad took lat week off, with a handful of runners competing in a pair of "last chance" meets, while senior Kolbi Sims got things going for the Utes at the Pac-12 Conference Multi-Event Championships.
• At the Weber State Twilight this past Wednesday, Kayla Rees set a new season-best time of 1:02.27 in the 400-meter hurdles, while Ruby Jane Mathewson notched a new personal-best in the event with a time of 1:02.74.
• Last Friday at the Portland Twilight, Jackie Martin took home the title in the 200-meter dash, while notching a new personal-best time of 24.71 ... Maya LeBar finished behind her in second-place with a new personal-best time of 24.74 ... Skyler Blair competed in the 400-meter event for the first time in her collegiate career, taking second overall with a time of 55.27 ... Sarah Newton notched a new PR in the 800-meters with a time of 2:05.88, as did Brooklyn James with a new personal-best time of 2:08.57 ... Cara Woolnough posted a new PR in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:24.89, while Scarlet Dale PR'd with a time of 4:25.31.
• Sims took fifth-place overall out of the 14 competitors in the women's heptathlon event this past weekend ... Sims set new PR's in the 200-meters (24.60), 800-meters (2:16.77) and the javelin throw (39.40m), while going on to score a new personal-best total of 5,477 points in the heptathlon ... the 5,477 points also sets a new school record at Utah, surpassing Amanda Feight's former No. 1 total of 5,328 points that was set back on May 10, 2007.

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY NOTES
• Utah earned a 12th-place finish, registering a total of 15 points in the 2018 Pac-12 Championships.
• Caitlin Faust (6th) and Sarah Newton (7th) notched points for the Utes in the 800-meters, while Grayson Murphy (2nd) hauled in Utah's largest point-total in the 3000-meter steeplechase event.
• Utah also earned points finishing seventh in the 4x400-meter relay.
• Utah's highest finish in the Pac-12 Championships came back in 2012 when the Utes scored 21 points to take 10th-place overall, and also in 2015, when Utah scored 14 points for a 10th-place finish.
• Utah's highest point total in the Pac-12 Championships was a 23-point effort back in 2014. The Utes would go onto finish 11th-place that season.

The newest USTFCCCA event rankings were released this week with Utah posting top-50 marks in the 800m, 5000m, 1500m, 400m hurdles and 400m. Utah also ranks among the nation's top 75 in the 100m.
