SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah baseball hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead and held on from there to take the opening game of the series against Washington State at Smith's Ballpark.
With
Rykker Tom and
Christian Almanza on base,
Briley Knight hit his second homer of the season to put Utah up for good to help snap their losing streak.
Oliver Dunn went 3-4 on the day and
Chase Fernlund went 2-4 and had two RBI.
Utah got off to a great start in the first as
Erick Migueles and
Zack Moeller drew walks. After a wild pitch advanced the two runners into scoring position, Fernlund hit a single to center field to score both runs.
Any time Utah would put a run across the plate, Washington State had an answer tying the score in the second and then again in the fifth.
The Cougars took a one-run lead in the sixth inning, but because of some strong defense by Utah it limited Washington State to just one run. WSU had runners on second and third and hit a double, but
Dominic Foscalina got the ball back in quickly allowing the Cougars to only score one run. On the next play, Dunn made a great catch in foul territory and threw out the runner trying to tag up from third at home.
Washington State held that lead until the bottom of the seventh when Knight stepped to the plate. With runners on first and second, he drove one down the right field line and it just stayed fair to put Utah up 6-4.
Nick Caviglia and
Zac McCleve came up big out of the bullpen not giving up any runs and only allowing four hits to close out the game. Caviglia earned his first career win and McCleve got his fourth save of the season.
David Watson got the start and pitched 5.1 innings giving up four runs on 10 hits.
Utah and Washington State will be back at it on Friday, May 17 at 11:30 a.m. in Smith's Ballpark.
