TUCSON, Ariz. – Utah senior
Kolbi Sims set multiple personal-bests, while also setting a new school record with 5,447 points in the heptathlon late Sunday evening at the Pac-12 Conference Track & Field Multi-Event Championships that took place at Arizona's Drachman Stadium.
Sims, who entered Sunday's final day of competition with 3,212 points, registered a total of 2,235 over the final three events finish with a school-best 5,447 points and took fifth-place overall in the championships. The 5,447 points gives Sims the new school record in the heptathlon, beating out Amanda Feight's former school-best total of 5,328 points which was previously set on May 10, 2007.
Sims also becomes the highest finisher in school history, in the heptathlon for a Utah student-athlete at the Pac-12 Championships, as she surpassed Brianna LeRoy's seventh-place finish (5,221 points) from the 2012 Pac-12 Championships.
Sims opened Sunday's final three events finishing seventh in the long jump event with a mark of 5.64m (18' 6"), for a total of 741 points. She followed taking fourth-place in the javelin throw with a new personal-best toss of 39.40m (129' 3"), for a total of 656 points. The mark surpassed her previous best throw of 37.16m, which she set earlier this season at the Aztec Open.
Sims closed out the heptathlon event taking third in the 800-meter run, finishing in a new personal-best time of 2:16.77 – nearly a full two seconds faster than her previous best time (2:18.72). She would go onto score 868 points in the event to bring her total to the new school record mark of 5,447.
Sims' 5,447 point total now currently ranks No. 14 overall among women scores from the NCAA West Region and No. 22 overall in the entire NCAA.
For the entire weekend, Sims would go onto set new PR's in the 200-meters (24.60, from Saturday), javelin throw and 800-meters. Her heptathlon total surpasses her previous best score of 5,402 points that she set last season at the Mountain West Conference Championships.
Utah will be back in action again next weekend for the conclusion of the 2019 Pac-12 Conference Track & Field Championships, with field and running events to take place next Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12. The championships will continue to take place at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
