CORVALLIS, Ore. – Utah Softball dropped the opener to Oregon State as the Beavers walked off with a 2-1 win this evening.
Â
Utah put multiple runners on base in the first four innings but could not break through against sophomore Mariah Mazon. The Utes had a runner thrown out at the plate in the first, one called out for leaving base early in the second and another caught stealing in the third before leaving them loaded in the fourth.
Â
Ellessa Bonstrom collected her first hit of the evening with two down in the first. She doubled to center but was unable to score on an
Alyssa Barrera single to center.
Â
In the fourth,
BreOnna Castaneda was hit with a pitch,
Hailey Hilburn reached on an error and
Jordyn Gasper took a four-pitch walk. However, Mazon got a strikeout and ground ball back to the circle to keep Utah scoreless.
Â
After working out of a jam in the second, Hilburn found herself in trouble again during the third. After striking out Camryn Ybarra, she allowed a single to Frankie Hammoude for the game's first run.
Â
Bonstrom tallied her second hit in the fifth and reached second with two outs before another strikeout from Mazon ended the threat.
Â
The Utes tied it in the sixth as Hilburn connected on the first pitch she saw for a homer. It was her eighth of the season, tying
Ally Dickman for the team lead.
Â
OSU loaded the bases in the final frame as Hilburn walked her fifth and sixth batters of the night before an untimely Utah error. Jessica Garcia, one of three seniors in the lineup, started her final home weekend with the game-winning hit, a single to right.
