SALT LAKE CITY – Utah volleyball started their 2019 season in style as they beat Saint Mary's in straight sets in the Huntsman Center on Friday, August 30.
The Utes were led by familiar faces, but also had four freshmen see their first action in a Utah uniform.
Kenzie Koerber and
Dani Drews both posted double-figure kills as Koerber led the team with 14 hitting .522 and Drews had 10. Koerber had 5.0 blocks and Drews had 3.0 and both of them finished with five digs.
Berkeley Oblad was back on the court for the Utes and played big all match finishing with nine kills and 8.0 blocks.
The first set was tight until Utah went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-10 lead. Utah grew their lead to as much as seven before taking the set 25-20.
The second set was tight throughout, but the Utes gained the edge late going up 22-19. Utah got two set points, but the Gaels spoiled both tying the set at 24. Utah didn't blink going to Koerber and Oblad for two straight kills and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match.
Staring at a sweep to open the season, Utah didn't mess around in the third, quickly growing their lead to five by the first media timeout. Saint Mary's tried to mount a comeback, but the Utes were too much as they quickly built back up their lead and closed out the match with a 25-18 third-set win.

Utah's day isn't done as they'll be back in the Huntsman Center for a 7:30 match against No. 7 Kentucky tonight.
