Head Coach Kyle Whittingham Opening statement…
"We came out just as we hoped and should have, 3-0 in the non-conference. We committed too many penalties and got sloppy at the end. We need to be smarter in those situations. We had our first turnover of the year. We had the one takeaway which is not enough. We played good run defense. The offense was very productive and we had a chance to play a lot of offensive line guys. That will be valuable as the season goes on. It is a short turnaround for Friday night at the L.A. Coliseum."
On getting off to a good start…
"It was good to see Jadon Redding come in and knock one through. It was good to get off to a fast start, get up 10-0. We started better than we did the first two ball games."
On Tyler's long throws down the field…
"We need to be able to throw the deep ball. Tyler played tremendously again and had a good completion percentage. He did not miss many throws. It was good to see Jason Shelley and Drew Lisk get some throws. We wanted a little more productivity from the other running backs."
On R.J. Hubert…
"I thought R.J. played well as did the secondary as a unit. The passing numbers for the opposition were not good. We played good coverage. The pass rush was very good, had two or three sacks. R.J. filled in for Julian Blackmon and did a nice job."
On Bryan Thompson…
"This is what we expected from Bryan. He is finally healthy and ready to do his thing. We know he is a very good player and what he did today is what we need all season. He has a great skill set. He is big, can run, has big hands. He did not surprise me but did impress me."
On accomplishing what he wanted during the non-conference schedule…
"Number one is getting three wins and secondly, the offense that's been installed is running well so far."
On Zack Moss getting closer to the Utah rushing yardage record…
"Barring injury, he will put this way out of reach. He means so much and he does so much for our program. Since coming in a freshman, he has been very productive. He had over 100 yards in a quarter-and-a-half and we will lean on him as the season goes on."
On the offensive line…
"The offensive line that played the last two games is different than the one who started the first week. For an inexperienced line to lose two guys early on, they played really well the last two weeks. Tyler escaped a few times today but not allowing any sacks is a good statistic to have."
On Tyler Huntley's play…
"Andy Ludwig has done wonders with Tyler. They are on the same page and in sync. Tyler is like a sponge. You say something and he pays attention. He is playing his best football as a Ute, no question. It is good to see it happen because he worked hard for this chance to shine as a senior."
Utah Players
#1 Tyler Huntley, QB On Bryan Thompson…
"He is doing a great job getting open down field. He brings another element to the game. All the receivers do. It feels good to have all those weapons out there."
On how things feel going into Pac-12 play…
"We left a lot of points on the field and we can improve in that area."
#2 Zack Moss, RB On the team's performance…
"I think we can improve on a lot of things. Looking at the film, on offense, defense and special teams, we can find something that needs to be fine-tuned. I think we handled business these first three games like we wanted to."
On heading to USC…
"We have a very big goal and no one is going to get in the way of that. History won't get in the way of that."
On getting close to Utah's all-time rushing yardage record…
"It is a testament to the hard work I put in. It is a credit to my teammates and coaches, but I am ready for our team to achieve its goals."
On his running mentality…
"I tried to attack the game like I do every week. I just happened to have a big play that sparked us and it carried on to the other guys."
#19 Bryan Thompson, WR On getting on the field…
"It has been a long time coming. I had a tough couple of years and I don't like the spotlight on me. It was a good team effort and team win."
On his big plays down field…
"It means a lot to me and Zack because teams can't focus on the run if we stretch the field. We have a great quarterback and running back."
#20 Devin Lloyd, LB On the team's defensive performance…
"We played solid pass coverage. We wanted more turnovers and interceptions but it was solid all around."
On getting a shutout…
"We shoot for that every game and to hold them to zero points. If they don't score, they don't win."
Idaho State Quotes
Head Coach Rob Phenicie On what it was like playing the No. 11 team in the FBS…
"It was pretty much what we thought it would be. They are big and physical. Your margin for error is minimal when you play one of these games and you can't give up big plays. I would be content if they had to go on 20-play drives, that's fine. Some of the things we have to address is giving up big plays. Kudos to our defense. The Utes took the first drive down to the whatever yard line and we held them to a field goal. Like I said, are there moral victories? No. But we held them on fourth down at the other end. We created the first turnover they've had all year. So we did some good things."
Â
"You could see that the difference with these Power Five teams compared to the Big Sky teams is we're a step slower. We're a step behind. That's the difference. They're going to play Washington State and USC in the next two weeks. We have to go look at what we did. We've already talked about it in the locker room. For us now, it's all about playing Northern Iowa and getting to the playoffs."
On what led to Utah's big plays…
"Just not quite doing the assignment to the exact way it should be. When you've got cover three, you can't get beat deep when you are in deep corner, and we just had a linebacker miss the wheel. Like I said, it's one thing if they drive 20 plays at a time. But handing them big plays is not what we wanted to do. That's not to say that the defense didn't play great. We held them to seven points in the second half."
On how his offense did against Utah's defense…
"There's some things that we need to address on offense. But we protected a lot better than I thought we could. (Offensive coordinator) Mike Ferriter and I were concerned about that. Those guys manned-up a little bit and did a good job. But that's a stout front on the other side. It is one of the top if not the top front in the country. They have some big dudes. Number 6 (Bradlee Anae) and 99 (Leki Fotu) are great players and they have some good linebackers. Their scheme is not that difficult but they are very good at executing."
On how his team responded to things…
"The one thing this team didn't do, there was never a sense of panic in the whole game on the sideline. It's a tribute to these guys. They were in it the whole time. They were tuned in. Our coaches did a great job of coaching these guys up. They felt like that at any time they were going to get on a role and get a couple of touchdowns."
TE - Austin Campbell On the experience of playing Utah…
"It was a lot of fun. Really a great atmosphere. Really good fans, a great team and a great venue. It was a pretty cool experience."
On what Utah did to limit their offense…
"They had a good defensive game plan against us. It was kind of one of those days. Offensively, we need to get better. I don't think we're hitting on all cylinders like where we want to be later on this year."
LB - Kody Graves On playing a team like Utah…
"It's always fun to play a Pac-12 team. It's kind of weird because you didn't really notice the crowd all that much. You notice it when you run out on to the field. It wasn't really that filled up when I went out with the captains. But then a couple of series in, it got to be a pretty packed house."
On what Utah did on offense…
"They are really physical and have three or four running backs they can put in and they are all good. We knew that coming in. We see a couple of teams like that in our conference like that, like North Dakota and Montana State, where they have really big backs who are really talented. We gave up a couple of big plays in the first half and then we tightened up in the second half. The tackling had to be a little bit better and we took care of that in the second half. Really, there were three or four plays that come to mind in that first half. But I feel like if we eliminate those, it's a closer game."
