MISSOULA, Mont. – The University of Utah women's tennis team ended their three-match road trip on Sunday topping Minnesota at the PEAK Racquet Club with a final score of 4-3. With this win, the Utes have started the year off 5-0, which is the first time since the 1983-84 season the program has gone undefeated in the opening five matches.
Â
"So incredibly proud of the team today," said first-year head coach
Ric Mortera. "We were able to come through some tough situations and pull out the win. This result is a testament to all of the work they have been putting in and I am so excited to see how we can continue to grow."
Â
Utah started the neutral-site contest against Minnesota strong in doubles action, first with the duo of
Madeline Lamoreaux and
Emily Dush carding the first victory of the day on court 2. Lamoreaux and Dush cruised by Dalila Said and Cammy Frei with a score of 6-1. To then seal the doubles point, the No. 24-ranked doubles team of
Whitney Hekking and
Madison Tattini defeated Tina Kreinis and Tiffany Huber at the No. 1 position, 6-3, to take the 1-0 lead going into singles.
Â
In singles, Minnesota tied things up immediately after a win on court five. Tattini posted a win at the No. 1 spot to gain the Ute lead back, beating out Tina Kreinis, 7-6, 6-0. To then put the Utes up 3-1, M. Lamoreaux tallied a win at the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 7-6 victory against Tiffany Huber.Â
Â
Utah couldn't put away Minnesota as the Gophers rallied to earn three-set wins on the No. 3 and No. 4 courts to tie the score up 3-3 and leave the match to come down to the No. 6 court. After winning the first set against Minnesota's River Hart 6-3, A. Lamoreaux fell in the second set 6-7. With the match on the line, Lamoreaux came through with a 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the match for Utah, 4-3.
Â
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week when the team competes in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, which will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Utes are set to match up with Central Florida on Saturday, Jan. 25, followed by a match against Ole Miss or Michigan, on Sunday, Jan. 26.Â
