The University of Utah women's tennis team is set to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, attending the site that features host Michigan, UCF, and Ole Miss. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26 at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Utah (5-0) will face No. 12 UCF (1-0) to open the event on Saturday at 12 p.m. MT. TOURNAMENT TALK
The tournament will start on Saturday with site-host Michigan taking on Ole Miss at 9 a.m. MT, followed by the dual match between Utah and UCF at 12 p.m. MT. The teams failing to advance following the opening round will fall to the consolation round and square off on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 8 a.m. MT. The winners of Saturday's matches will advance to the championship round on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT. The overall winner of the tournament will advance to the National Team Indoors.

STRONG START
For the first time since the 1983-84 season, the University of Utah women's tennis team has started the season with five straight wins. The Utes started the season off with two sweeps against Southern Utah, 7-0 and 5-0, and are coming off three wins this past weekend in Missoula, Mont. The Utes swept Montana twice with both match scores coming in at 4-0, followed by a 4-3 win against Minnesota.

SCOUTING UCF
UCF comes into this tournament ranked No. 12 in the nation. The Knights have had just one dual match this season and downed Cornell 7-0. Last season, UCF went 24-4 overall, which included going 6-0 in the AAC. The Knights advanced to the Sweet 16, but came up short against Pepperdine with a score of 2-4.

Key players for the Knights include the nation's No. 34-ranked singles player in the nation, Rebeka Stolmar, and No. 54-ranked Marie Mattel. Stolmar and Mattel are also ranked as the No. 3 doubles team, while teammates Valeriya Zeleva and Ksenia Kuznetsova are ranked No. 11 in doubles.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN/OLE MISS
Michigan will enter the tournament ranked No. 14 in the nation, finishing 20-6 overall in 2018-19 with an 11-0 record in Big 10 conference play. The Wolverines also appeared in the NCAA Tournament, falling in the third round to Georgia, 2-4. Key players for Michigan include the No. 26-ranked singles player in the nation, Giulia Pairone, and No. 85-ranked Andrea Cerdan.

Ole Miss has started the season 2-0 with wins against Memphis and UT Martin. The Rebels finished 12-12 in 2018-19, with a 5-8 overall record in SEC conference play. Key players for Ole Miss include the No. 48-ranked singles player in the nation, Sabina Machalova, along with the No. 57-ranked doubles team in the nation of Tereza Janatova and Anna Vrbenska.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah women's tennis is coming off of a three-match road swing where they faced off against Montana and Minnesota in Missoula, Mont. Utah first saw two matches against Montana and came away with two 4-0 sweeps against the Grizzlies.Â

Against Montana, Utah earned doubles victories from the duos of

Emily Dush. The Utes then completed the first sweep of the day with singles wins by
Whitney Hekking,
Madeline Lamoreaux, and
Madison Tattini in the top three positions for Utah. In the second match against Montana, Dush and M. Lamoreaux recorded yet another victory, followed by a victory from No. 24-ranked Hekking and Tattini to allow the Utes to take the doubles point. To then finish off the second sweep of the day for the Utes, the back-half of the singles lineup - Hersh, A. Lamoreaux, and Dush - all recorded victories in singles on their respective courts for Utah.Â

To close out the weekend, the Utes posted a 4-3 win against Minnesota to improve to a 5-0 record on the season. The duos of M. Lamoreaux and Dush, along with #24 Hekking and Tattini carded victories to give Utah the early 1-0 lead. After a back-and-forth battle in singles, the match was then tied up at an even 3-3, with the fate of the match coming down to the No. 6 court.
Anya Lamoreaux was matched up against River Hart, and after splitting sets, Lamoreaux won the third set 6-1 to seal the 4-3 win over the Gophers.

ABOUT THE ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND
This will be the 12
th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off, with 60 teams per gender traveling to 15 host sites across the country to participate. Each host institution will welcome three other teams for a single elimination event, with the winners of each site advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships from Feb. 7-10.Â

The ITA Kick-Off Weekend is unique in college athletics in that each regional is determined via the Kickoff Weekend Draft, where each team selects which regional they wish to participate in. Selections are made in order of the final 2018-2019 ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Michigan ranked No. 14, Central Florida was No. 19, Utah came in ranked at No. 44, and Ole Miss at No. 48 to round out the site selection.Â

The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when the Utes face off against UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. at 12 p.m. MT. Utah will play another dual match in California before returning home, matching up against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Feb. 16 in Los Angeles at 12 p.m. MT.Â
