When did you first start playing tennis and why?
"I first started playing when I was eight years old and it was because my family is very into tennis. My great grandpa started youth tennis in Utah and was the Davis Cup captain, and my uncle also played for Harvard."
Â
Did you play any other sports growing up besides tennis? When did you decide that tennis was the sport that you wanted to pursue?
"I used to play competitive soccer and then I moved to California when I was nine. My parents said that I had to make a choice between the two, so I decided to stick with tennis."
Â
What was it like playing tennis at Torrey Pines High School before moving back home and attending East High School?
"I really loved playing in California. It was a super competitive environment that challenged me a lot. I look back on that time a lot. It helped make me into the player I am today."
Â
Did you compete in any competitive tournaments? How did those help you develop as a tennis player?
"I played in both the Southern California and Intermountain section. I played in a lot of zonal tennis tournaments. They were really competitive and helped me become a better player. Playing at different national tournaments across the country also helped me see what other players were doing and what I could do to get better."
Â
Your grandfather, David L. Freed, is part of the Utah Tennis Hall of Fame. How did he help you throughout your tennis career?
"He was someone that I always looked up to and was just an amazing person. Knowing his legacy and knowing I came from him gives me a lot motivation, and I know if he was here today, I would have made him proud."
Â
Why did you decide to come to the University of Utah? What stuck out about the U that made you choose it over other schools that you were looking at?
"Both my parents and grandparents graduated from the U and I have been a Utah fan since I was born. I wanted to play at the U ever since I started playing tennis, so it was a dream come true for me when I got an offer."
Â
Now in your sophomore season with the Utes, what has been your biggest takeaway from your first two seasons? What are you excited about for this year?
"I just feel a lot more confident and comfortable now. I had to get used to college my first couple of years. I'm really excited for the new coaching staff. They have already helped me improve a lot and I'm super excited to see what we can do as a team this year."
Â
What is your major and what kind of career would you like to pursue once you graduate?
"I want to get into sports marketing and currently I am majoring in marketing with a minor in information systems. I was an intern with the Utah Sports Commission over the summer and I want to do something along the lines of that for my career."
Â
When you aren't playing tennis, what're some things that you like to do in your free time?Â
"When I'm not playing tennis, I really like going on hikes with my two golden retrievers and travel. Over the summer, I was able to go to places like Spain, France, and Morocco."
