Season Outlook
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah lacrosse team opens its 2020 season on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1:00 p.m., against Bellarmine.
Head coach
Brian Holman is excited to begin Utah's second NCAA season.
"I think that the kids are in a great frame of mind," Holman said. "I think we've had a really good preseason, and now it's for real. We're healthy, we're all excited and it's the first step in a new journey. We have a really good opponent coming in that we played a one-goal game with last year. They have a new coach and are going to be excited, we're going to be excited. We want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. We have to keep doing what we do and being true to who we are. Yes, it's a game and counts for real, but as we remind the guys, you can't get to Saturday unless you get through the rest of the week. Our approach is always to get better every day, focus on the things that we do well and try to get better at some of the things that we're not doing so well. We don't want to beat ourselves.
"They're so dialed in," Holman continued. "They don't look much different than they did when they came back from break, which to me is a great sign. If we stay focused on what we're about, trying to keep getting better, the game will take care of itself. The exciting part for me is that I sense that in our guys."
Utah went 5-10 last season in its inaugural campaign. The Utes return 21 players from last year's team, several who played a key role in the Utes first NCAA season. Utah returns the majority of its offense, including junior
Josh Stout (43G, 5A), senior
James Sexton (24G, 25A) and senior
Jimmy Perkins (24G). Senior
Aaron Fjeldsted provides strong experience at midfield (13A, 11G) while sophomore
Samuel Cambere (20 CT, 52 GB), senior
Seth Neeleman (54 GB, 16 CT) and sophomore
Nick Hapney (11 CT, 16 GB) have been strong on defense. Several newcomers will look to make an impact, including
Colin Burke, a transfer from Fairfield who led the team in scoring three seasons, while U.S. Lacrosse All-American freshmen
Cole Brams and
Kellen Hoke will deepen the faceoff crew.
Utah defeated Bellarmine last year, 10-9, in Salt Lake City on March 9. The Knights went 3-10 last season.
