Abby Jarzin chose to transfer to Utah after spending her freshman season at Northern Michigan. Jarzin finished seventh at the NCAA Championship and was named the Central Skiing Association Skier of the Year.
When did you start skiing?
I started skiing when I was six as a fun thing to do with my family in the winter. I joined this group near where I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin and that's how I started when I was six.
What were your favorite parts of skiing when you first started?
Just being outside at the winter and being with friends and family. It was a social thing for me and as I got a little bit older. The whole fun of it was being outside but also doing something that was different and cool.
When did you realize you could be really good at it?
When I was little I was definitely competitive and when I was in that younger kids ski group, we would see the high school group training and I thought it was so cool. I thought to myself that I want to be as fast as them and started taking it a little more seriously in middle school. Then it progressed from there and my competitiveness helped a lot.
What do you love about skiing the most?
I'd say it's similar to when I was younger and just being with friends. Moving your body in such a cool way and being outside while you're doing that. In the winter when it's so cold, there isn't a ton to do, but with skiing you can get out there and go to beautiful places and be in the snow. It's just the whole atmosphere that I really love. I enjoy the racing, but it always goes back to enjoying the people I'm around.
What stood out to you about picking Utah?
I had raced out here in high school. Utah really stood out to me because they have a very good reputation and are really good. Academically it had a great program for the major that I'm doing and coincided with the team being really good. They're always up there in the region and they have so many resources from having an advisor, a ski building, sport psychologist and a full-time trainer with us. It's awesome.
What are your goals?
I don't usually make result-oriented goals, but it's more of how I want to ski. I want to race really strong and well throughout the season. I don't want it to be drastic up and down. I'd like to make it to NCAA's at some point. Right now, it's just getting stronger, skiing well and staying healthy while having fun.
