SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team struggled to slow down the sharp shooting of the Stanford offense tonight in the Jon M. Huntsman Center, falling to the No. 8 Cardinal 97-64. Utah is 12-12 overall this season and 5-8 in Pac-12 play.
The first five minutes of the game was a shootout with four lead changes going into the first media timeout, including the Utes taking an 8-3 lead after back-to-back threes gave Utah the five-point cushion. Unfortunately for the Utes, Stanford would answer with a 14-2 run, eventually extending its lead to double-digits to end the first quarter.
Kemery Martín scored four of Utah's first six points of the second quarter to cut the Cardinal lead to six, but Stanford would go on to shoot a game-high 65-percent from the floor in the period to end the half with a 22-point lead.
The Utes weren't able to whittle away at the Stanford lead in the second half, despite a strong third quarter from
Lola Pendande that saw her score six of her 12 points. Stanford would go on to outscore the Utes in the final period 23-18, finishing with the win and a final score of 97-64.
LEADERS
Utah was led in scoring by Martín, who tied her career-high in points with 15, shooting 6-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the arc. She added two rebounds, an assist and a block.
Pendande added 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, also going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line, also recording six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Daneesha Provo rounded out Utah's double-digit scorers with 11 points, shooting 50-percent from the three (3-of-6).
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: Head Coach Lynne Roberts
"I think we have to acknowledge how well Stanford shot tonight; I mean they were 15-of-30 from the three. They came ready to play and played exceptionally well. I don't think we weathered the punches well in the second quarter, and offensively when the game got away from us we tried to do too much one-on-one. They shot 20-percent better than us, and that was the game."
"Kemery is coming along. You can see it. She took a couple of shots tonight that weren't great, but it is good seeing her be confident and starting to feel confident."
"We move on. We play Cal on Sunday and we will be ready to go and ready to fight."

Freshman Kemery Martín has scored in double-digits in four games this season and twice against Stanford. She is averaging 14.0 points against the Cardinal this season.
