PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Utah Softball responded to its first losses of the season yesterday with a 3-0 win over Colorado State this morning.
Katie Faulk drove in a pair and clubbed her first homer of the season, while the pitching duo of
Mary Beth Feldman and
Halle Morris held the Ram batters to just three hits.
Â
Feldman skated through the first couple innings and Utah got on the board in the second.
BreOnna Castaneda walked and stole second. Faulk slapped a ball to right, allowing Castaneda to score the game's first run. A fielding error allowed Faulk to get all the way to third and it proved beneficial as
Julia Noskin singled her home for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Utah threatened in the third as
Haley Denning doubled to extend her hitting streak to seven games, but could not add any insurance. Denning hot .467 for the weekend and led the team with four runs scored.
Â
Faulk added her solo blast in the fourth to go in front 3-0, and Feldman then gave way to Morris in the circle. Feldman improved to 2-0 on the year with a 1.95 ERA after four scoreless innings. Morris did not allow a hit over the final three frames, bringing her ERA down to 1.17 and picking up her second save.
Â
The Utes had another scoring chance in the fifth as Bonstrom and Castaneda singled, but a diving play by the CSU third baseman nullified the threat. Dating back to last season, Bonstrom has now reached base safely in 16 straight games and hit .500 for the weekend
Â
This game served as a bit of revenge for last season when the Utes lost 6-1 to CSU. Today's starter, Jessica Jareki threw a complete game to get the win.
Â
Utah is back tomorrow for the final game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge against the Mexican National Team at 11:30 a.m. CT
