PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Utah Softball started strong at the Mary Nutter Classic with a 4-0 win over Long Beach State and a 12-6 victory against UC Riverside.
Sydney Sandez was dominant in the opener before the Utes rallied from a five-run deficit in the nightcap.

Sandez sparkled in the opener with six innings of two-hit ball before making way for
Halle Morris in the seventh as the Utah pitchers kept the LBSU hitters off their game
Offensively, it only took one inning of work to get the win as the Utes scored all their runs in the fourth.
Madi Jacobus and
Alyssa Barrera single with one out and
Ellessa Bonstrom reached via an error to load the bases.
After
BreOnna Castaneda was hit by a pitch,
Destiny Quiles snacked a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
Katie Faulk laid down a perfect bunt to bring in another for what turned out to be the final score. Jacobus and Barrera both finished with a pair of hits on the afternoon

It was an uphill climb but the Utes fought their way to the summit in a comeback win against the Highlanders.
Nadia Witt started the game with a RBI single and Emma Ramelot added a two-run double in the second before Melanie Olmos also tacked on a pair to put the Utes in a 5-0 hole.
After leaving the bases loaded in their half of the inning, Utah got on the board and back in the game during the third.
Julia Noskin, Jacobus and Barrera all singled to load the bases and two batters later, Castaneda slapped a two-run base hit to left center.
Sandez was back in the circle for the fourth and worked out of a jam upon entering in relief.
In the bottom half,
Makayla Hurst struck out but hustled down the line to reach on a wild pitch. She was lifted for pinch-runner
Makenna Calderon and, after walks to
Jordyn Gasper and
Haley Denning, scored on an infield hit by Noskin.
Trailing by two, Barrera grounded a ball to second for another run and the throw went awry into left field for another to tie the score, 5-5.
Despite the momentum shift, Marissa Burk homered in the first at bat of the fifth to put UCR back on top.
Utah said enough to the shenanigans in their time at the plate.

AJ Militello scored on Faulk's single back up the box.
Denning and Noskin singled again before Jacobus also delivered a hit to put the Utes ahead for the first time, 7-6. Barrera followed with a massive blast to put Utah in double digits. Utah reloaded the bases and a walk to Faulk have the backstop another RBI.
Barrera capped her night with her fifth RBI, a single in the sixth to score Denning. The top four batters in the lineup, Denning, Noskin, Jacobus and Barrera combined for 11 hits, scored eight runs and drove in seven.
Sandez improved to 7-2 with just one run over 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Mary Beth Feldman helped quell the damage and keep the Utes close with two innings of her own out of the bullpen
Utah has another doubleheader tomorrow starting at 5 p.m. PT vs. Cal State Fullerton and followed by an exhibition against former Ute standout
Hannah Flippen and the U.S. National Team.
