SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's tennis team battled through a tight match with in-state rival Brigham Young Friday night at the Eccles Tennis Center and pulled out the 4-2 victory to claim the program's 11th-straight win against the Cougars. Utah moved to 9-3 on the season and remained undefeated at home with a 5-0 slate in Salt Lake City.
Â
"I am so incredibly proud of the team tonight," said first-year Ute head coach
Ric Mortera. "It was a tough match and the team found a way to pull through in some difficult situations. I was so happy with how we competed and I'm excited to see how this match helps us continue to improve."
Â
Utah's No. 1 and No. 3 duos caught momentum early and picked up quick wins to take a lead 1-0. No. 16-ranked
Whitney Hekking and
Madison Tattini topped BYU's No. 1 pairing handedly to sit at 11-0 in spring doubles play together.
Anya Lamoreaux and
Lindsay Hung downed their opponents 6-2 to seal another doubles point.Â
Tattini then put the Utes up 2-0 on at the No. 1 position to start off singles when the Ute sophomore had control of her match from start to finish. Tattini defeated BYU's Kate Cusick-Truman 6-3, 6-1. Despite the 2-0 lead, the Cougars then added two wins to even the match after picking up straight-set victories on the No. 2 and No. 5 courts.Â
Â
With the momentum starting to sway,
Emily Dush added to Utah's singles wins and put the Utes back in the lead with a victory on court three. Dush beat out Anastasia Abramyan with a score of 6-1, 6-3. Down to two matches remaining, Hekking trailed her match but battled back in her second set, winning a tiebreak to send it to a third set. Meanwhile,
Anya Lamoreaux won a hard-fought first set 7-5 and midway through the second was tied 3-3.Â
Lamoreaux dropped the next two games and found herself down 3-5 in the second set, while Hekking trailed her opponent early in her third set. Down but not out, Lamoreaux wouldn't go down without a fight and rallied off four straight games to take down Helen Jiao 7-5 in the No. 6 position to clinch the Utah win.Â
