IN THE BOOKS
The Utah women's tennis team finished the 2020 season with a 10-5 overall record before the season was ended unexpectedly due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Utah posted an 8-0 record against opponents within the ITA Mountain Region. The Utes had just hit the halfway point of the season and had completed one weekend of conference play. A brand new coaching staff –
Ric Mortera (HC),
Janet Koch (AC) and
Slim Hamza (VC) - completed their first year in Salt Lake City together and led the Utes to memorable team highlights and individual successes.
Â
HOT START
Utah recorded its best start to a season since the 1983-84 campaign when the Utes went 5-0 to begin 2020. Utah earned a pair of doubleheader wins against Southern Utah and Montana for the first four victories of the season. To pick up the fifth-straight win to start the year, Utah faced Minnesota in a neutral-site match in Bozeman, Mont. Utah earned the doubles point and then followed with wins from their two top singles players,
Madison Tattini and
Madeline Lamoreaux, to build the lead 3-1. Minnesota fought back and tied the match 3-3, but
Anya Lamoreaux battled through a three-set match to clinch the win for Utah.
Â
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
The Utes played at the Eccles Tennis Center five times this season and did not drop a match. Highlighting the home slate, Utah knocked off No. 33 Denver for the squad's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Emily Dush and
Whitney Hekking picked up singles wins to go with the doubles point and with the match at 3-2 in favor of Utah,
Anya Lamoreaux once again clinched for the Utes on court six to complete the 4-2 upset over the Pioneers.
Â
In what went on to be the final home match of the season, Utah took on BYU in front of a packed house at the Eccles Tennis Center. In a tight match from start to finish between the in-state rivals, the Utes came out victorious and posted their 11th-straight victory against BYU in the series. Utah rolled in doubles play for the first point of the match and then was followed by Tattini cruising in the top singles spot to put the Ute lead at 2-0. BYU tied the match 2-2, but Dush countered and regained the lead with a win at the No. 4 position.
Anya Lamoreaux found herself again as the match-clincher for Utah and rallied back from down 3-5 in the second set to win the next four games and end the match for Utah to post a 4-2 win against BYU.
