INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Utah cornerback Julian Blackmon was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round with the 85th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft today.
Blackmon is the 13th member of the Utah secondary drafted by the NFL during Kyle Whittingham's tenure as head coach. He is also the second member of the Utes' 2019 secondary drafted this week, joining Jaylon Johnson who went in the second round to the Chicago Bears. Â
He is the second Ute in school history to be taken by the Colts after Indianapolis took Jackson Barton in the seventh round in the 2019 draft.
With both Blackmon and Johnson going in the second and third rounds today, it is the fourth time that two or more players from the Utah secondary have gone in the same draft. The last time the Utes had two go together was in 2017 when Marcus Williams went in the second round and Brian Allen followed in the fifth.
Blackmon's versatility in the secondary was a key to Utah's success during his time in Salt Lake City, earning All-Pac-12 honors at two different positions (All-Pac-12 cornerback in 2017, 2018 and as a safety in 2019). He was a 2019 All-American, finishing his career with 48 games played and 39 starts.
The Layton, Utah, native started 12 games his senior year, tying for the Pac-12 lead while ranking 17th in the FBS with four interceptions. His eight total passes defended tied for 13th in the Pac-12 while finishing fourth on the team in total tackles with 60.
One of his standout games in 2019 came against UCLA, finishing with a career-high 12 tackles that included 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception to earn Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week. He also notched his second-career pick-six his senior year, taking an interception to the end zone against BYU in the season opener for 39 yards, giving Utah a 30-6 lead in the fourth quarter.
Blackmon played and started in every game his sophomore and junior seasons, also earning MVP of the Heart of Dallas Bowl in Utah's win over West Virginia in 2017.
