SALT LAKE CITY – Utah's
Whitney Hekking was named the ITA Mountain Region Most Improved Senior by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday morning, while the women's tennis program earned the region's honorable mention Community Service Award.
Whitney Hekking continually progressed throughout her collegiate career at Utah and this year as a senior, Hekking was the sole captain and competed in the No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles positions. With partner
Madison Tattini, Hekking finished her final year as a Ute ranked No. 12 in the nation in doubles with a 12-1 overall record, which included winning 12-straight matches.
Highlighting the season, Hekking and Tattini upset the nation's then-ranked No. 3 duo from UCF. Including fall play, the Ute duo went 20-3. In singles, Hekking finished 6-6 overall in her shortened senior season. She was 7-0 against region opponents in doubles in spring play this year and and 6-0 in singles play against region opponents.
Hekking played mainly in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions throughout her career and moved up to be a solid No. 3 singles player this season, only playing behind the reigning ITA Mountain Region Freshman of the Year and the reigning Big Sky Freshman of the Year. The Kaysville, Utah native spent the majority of her doubles career at the No. 2 spot until this season once again moving up for the team in her final season.

The Utah women's tennis team earned an honorable mention nod for the Community Service Award after completing 90 hours over the course of the year. With each student-athlete averaging about 10 hours, the Utes created sack lunches for the homeless population of Salt Lake City. The team bought sandwich supplies, granola bars and water bottles and after the lunch was assembled, they went around the community and distributed. The team also volunteered with Tennis and Tutoring to spend time teaching tennis to kids and followed the activities by spending time in the classroom working on reading and writing skills.
