SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah ski team begins its 2021 season on Sunday, January 10 as the collegiate season opens with giant slalom races an in Aspen, Colorado.
The alpine team will get going with the giant slalom with the women racing on Sunday, January 10 and the men competing on Monday, January 11. Following those races, then they'll race the slalom in Nederland, Colorado on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Nordic team begins competition on Sunday, January 17.
Due to the pandemic, alpine and Nordic skiers will not be in similar locations until the NCAA Ski Championships, which are set to be hosted by New Hampshire after the original host Middlebury could no longer host with its conference canceling winter sports. Most alpine meets will not see the men and women competing on the same day and most Nordic races are slated to be interval starts.
This past year, the Utes were in the middle of defending their 2019 National Championship when the NCAA Championship was stopped after the second day of competition due to the pandemic.
On the first day,
Sona Moravcikova and
Joachim Lien each placed in third in the women's and men's giant slalom at the NCAA Championship.
Utah has won two of the last three NCAA Championships, with the last coming behind the leadership of veteran coach
Fredrik Landstedt, who is in his third season as Director of Skiing.
