Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year earns second straight Academic All-America nod
AUSTIN, Texas – The accolades continue to roll in both on the football field and in the classroom for Utah's Britain Covey, as the Utes' junior wide receiver and renowned return man was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team on Wednesday.
Â
It is Covey's second Academic All-America award of his career, having garnered First Team laurels following the 2020 season.
Â
His academic success is encapsulated by a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average. Completing his business degree in Summer 2021, the Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year is also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree (2018, '20, '21), Pac-12 All-Academic and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll (2018, '19, '20). He's made six appearances on the University of Utah Dean's List, and earned seven career Athletic Director's Honor Roll awards.
Â
Covey, an in-state product from Provo, Utah, has been just as successful on the football field, most recently earning mention as a CBS Sports First Team All-American and FWAA Second Team All-American.
Â
He is a five-time All-Pac-12 selection, including four as a returner and First Team picks in 2018, '20 and '21. The 2021 Paul Hornung Watch List member, Preseason All-American and Preseason All-Pac-12 selection leads active players in the Pac-12 with 181 career receptions, second-most in Utah history. He has racked up 1,977 receiving yards as a Ute, ranking sixth all-time. This season, he leads the Utes and is sixth in the Pac-12 with 49 catches. Covey has caught at least one pass in 43 of his 46 career games, including 15 straight contests.
Â
In addition to his receiving prowess, Covey continues to rank among the top returners in the country as well as Utah history. He is averaging 14.7 yards per punt return, leading the Pac-12 and No. 3 in the FBS. It includes two punt return touchdowns, most recently a 78-yard runback vs. then-No. 3-ranked Oregon in front of a record Rice-Eccles Stadium crowd and national television audience. Covey, a team captain and member of the Utes' Leadership Council, owns four career punt return touchdowns which leads all active players in the FBS.
Â
His 1,092 career punt return yards are the most in program history at Utah, and he sits second in the Utes record book with 92 career punt returns. Covey is the only active wide receiver in FBS with over 1,500 career receiving yards and 600 career punt return yards.
Â
Covey owns 3,989 career all-purpose yards which ranks fourth at Utah.
Â
Winners of their first-ever Pac-12 Championship, the Utes are locked into preparation for the 108th Rose Bowl Game presented by Capital One Venture X. Utah will face Ohio State in the Jan. 1, 2022 contest, with kickoff on ESPN slated for 2 p.m. PT/3 p.m. MT in Pasadena, California.
Covey announced on Dec. 10 that he would turn his focus toward the 2022 NFL Draft following the Rose Bowl.
