FRANCONA, NH – The Utah ski team began its quest to win its 14
th national championship with the giant slalom on Wednesday, March 10.
The Utes closed the day in fourth place with 108 points and are 29 points out of first. Montana State and Westminster are in first place with 137 points.
Racers that finish in the top 10 are All-Americans and Utah finished with four of them today in the giant slalom.
On the men's side,
Gustav Vøllo led the way finishing in third. Right behind him were his teammates,
Joachim Lien, who came in fifth and
Wilhelm Normannseth in ninth. On the women's side,
Katie Parker came in eighth.
"Great day by our men and Katie," director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "Overall, it could've been better, but getting four All-Americans and being right in the mix, with two athletes not finishing, is a good start to the championship. Tomorrow will be a very hard day with warm temperatures and slow snow for our Nordic team!"
The women ran their race first and
Katie Parker had the fifth fastest time after the first run. Teammates
Sona Moravcikova was in 12
th after the first run and
Katie Vesterstein was in 31
st. The second run of the day caused a little trouble as Moravcikova and Vesterstein had falls causing them not to finish. Parker held strong on her second run and ended up finishing in eight place securing her second All-American honor in her career.
"I was in fifth place after the first run and tried to push more in the second run, but had a little mistake and lost some time on the last flat," Parker said. "Still happy with eight place though. Excited for the slalom on Friday and the boys were really impressive today!"
The men had a strong day all around from their three racers. Vøllo had the second fastest first run in the field, Lien had the fifth fastest first run and Normannseth had the seventh fastest run putting Utah in great position on the men's side.
They all had good second runs as well to give them all All-American honors. Vøllo finished on the podium in third place after finishing in 13
th last year. Lien stayed in the fifth position and Normannseth finished in ninth.
Their strong finishes gave Utah the most points on the men's side with 85.
"I was feeling very confident out there today," Vøllo said. "It was perfect snow, the weather was good and the whole team was charging! I'm happy with my skiing and I was psyched to see my teammates crush it too. Some of us were unlucky today, but I think we all are ready to go hard in the slalom. Now I'm excited to see what the Nordic team can pull tomorrow!"
It'll be the Nordic team's turn to race tomorrow as the women will race the 5K classic and the men will race the 10K classic.
