SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Ski Team picked up a pair of national awards today with
Sydney Palmer-Leger winning National Women's Nordic Skier of the Year and
Miles Havlick earning National Nordic Coach of the Year.
Palmer-Leger became just the 12
th skier in school history to win two races at the NCAA Championships, becoming a national champion in both the 5-km classic and the 15-km freestyle with the Utes winning their 14
th national title.
The Park City, Utah, native started the NCAA Championships off by coming away victorious in the 5-km with a time of 15:50.7 with the Utes sweeping the podium that day earning first through third. She followed it up with a dominating performance in the 15-km, winning the race by 24 seconds.
She earned All-RMISA first-team honors after the season was completed, also earning All-America status for her two key wins at the NCAA Championships.
Havlick, who was also named RMISA Nordic Coach of the Year, saw the Utah Nordic team dominate in conference competition, which carried over to nationals where the Utes made history once again. Utah won 13 of the 24 races this season, including 11 of 12 on the women's side while racking up 42 total podium appearances.
On the women's side in 2021, Palmer-Leger,
Novie McCabe and
Julia Richter combined for 22 podium finishes with Palmer-Leger winning four and Richter adding two victories to the total.
For the men, the Utes finished the season with 17 podium spots with
Samuel Hendry leading the way with nine podium finishes in 10 races.
Luke Jager was also second at the NCAA Championships in the classic race with Hendry taking third with the Utes scoring 211 out of a possible 222 points.
In all, the Utes won all four regular season meets, the RMISA Championship and the NCAA Championship. Utah's Nordic teams recorded 1,589 points in the regular season, including 842 points on the women's side, which was 237 points more than any other women's Nordic team.
