Urtez Powers Team Mexico Softball to Strong Finish in Tokyo Olympics

Former Utah star hit two home runs in leading team to Bronze Medal game and earn All-Olympics honors
TOKYO -- Former Utah Softball standout Anissa Urtez helped lead Team Mexico to the Bronze Medal game at the Tokyo Olympics with clutch hitting at the plate and stellar defensive play at shortstop, earning a position on the All-Olympics team.
After making history in the second game of the tournament by hitting the first home run by a Team Mexico player in the Olympics, Urtez added a second homer in game four, powering her team to its first Olympic win, 5-0 over Italy. Team Mexico made it two wins in a row with a 4-1 victory over Australia, in which Urtez went 2-4, to rally for a spot in the Bronze Medal game.
Team Mexico ultimately lost that game to Canada, 3-2, but for the tournament Urtez made an incredible impact, batting .300 (6-20) with two home runs, four RBI and 2 runs, while adding 14 assists and 9 putouts.
Urtez starred for the Utes from 2014-17, where she was a teammate of Team USA member Hannah Flippen. Flippen was a replacement player for Team USA, and competed throughout the entire pre-Olympics "Stand Beside Her" Tour, as well as traveling to Tokyo for the final preparations, but was unable to remain in Tokyo because COVID protocols only allowed for participating players to remain on-site.
