SUN VALLEY, Idaho and BOZEMAN, Mont. – Utah skiing is closing in on the Montana State Invitational, which will also start the RMISA schedule for the Utes' alpine team.
Nordic races are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15 (5/10K freestyle) and Sunday, Jan. 16 (10/15K classical), in Sun Valley, Idaho; the alpine portion of the meet will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 18 (giant slalom) and Wednesday, Jan. 19 (slalom) at Bridger Bowl in Bozeman, Montana.
It'll be the second Nordic meet of the season for the Utes, following the Utah Invitational at Soldier Hollow last week – which saw the Utes triumph in the team standings in both the freestyle sprints and classic distance racing. The squad was also awarded the College Cup at week's end. As the Utah Invitational was held within U.S. Nationals, the College Cup is presented to both the top collegiate team and individual competing throughout the week.
In college action last week,
Sydney Palmer-Leger had three wins, including both the freestyle sprints and 10K classical in the Utah Invitational, plus a classic sprints victory during an extra RMISA qualifier at SoHo on Friday, Jan. 7.
Noel Keeffe hit the men's podium in two of the three races on the week, taking second in the Utah Invitational's freestyle sprints plus a third-place effort in the classic sprints qualifier.
On the alpine side, there's reasons to be excited about the start of the collegiate season – most notably that five Utes who were lauded All-America in 2021 have returned in
Joachim Lien, Wilhelm Normannseth, Katie Parker, Katie Vesterstein and
Gustav Vøllo. It's a strong core that highlight a roster bolstered by talented newcomers working their way into the fold.
"There's communication, attention to detail," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "It's clear in how they show up on the hill for training, not just going through the motions. It's fun to watch those that have been here grow into leaders. You need the leaders to bring out the best in everyone."

Following the MSU Invitational, there is also an RMISA Invitational slalom race scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 20 at Bridger Bowl. It'll then be a quick trip home for the Utes, with the focus turning to Park City from Jan. 23-25 for alpine racing across the RMISA Invitational and Utah Invitational.
