SALT LAKE CITY – The #RV/-- Utah men's basketball had its way on offense Thursday night against Jacksonville State, knocking down 16 threes en route to its 99-58 victory over the Gamecocks inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The 16 triples were tied for fourth most in a single-game for Utah and the fourth time the Utes have hit 16 treys in a game. In addition,
Lazar Stefanovic had a breakout game for the Runnin' Utes recording a career-high 20 points on 6-of-8 from 3-point range to go with three assists and two steals.
The Utes (8-2, 2-0 Pac-12) got off to a blazing hot start to go up 19-0 on 6-of-6 from 3-point range before it missed a shot from beyond the arc. By the time the 11:52 media break came around, the Runnin' Utes had more made shots from 3-point range (6) than it did from two (3) for the 24-9 advantage.
The remainder of the half was much of the same with Utah closing out the final 4:27 minutes of play on an 11-0 run behind 13 points and 10 points from
Gabe Madsen and
Branden Carlson, respectively. The Utes used their size to their advantage and turned seven offensive rebounds into 13 points for the 45-23 lead at half.
Stefanovic had a huge second frame, scoring 12 of his career-high 20 points – all of which came from 3-point range. Utah's lead got as high as 49 points with 4:57 left to play after
Keba Keita put an exclamation point on the 7-0 run for Utah with a two-handed jam thanks to the delivery from
Luka Tarlac.
Carlson nearly had a double-double on the night, scoring 19 points with eight rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting – three of which came from deep. Madsen was red hot from the floor in the first half before finishing with 16 points, two rebounds and four assists behind 3-of-7 beyond the arc.
Marco Anthony stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists with a block and steal.
Rollie Worster was once again on triple-double watch before ending the night with seven points, five rebounds with eight assists.
Prior to the game, Utah forward
Gavin Baxter announced he was medically retiring from basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
The last time Utah had three players score 15-plus points in a game was at Mizzou last season … first time Utah has recorded multiple win so of 40-plus points in a single season since 2016-17 (4) … Utah dished out 25 assists as a team for the second time this season, the other coming against St. Thomas … Utah finished the night shooting .559 from the field as a team – the first time it's shot at least 55-percent from the floor since Manhattan last season (.583) … Utah turned 15 Jacksonville State (4-5) turnovers into 25 points.
