SALT LAKE CITY – The #RV/-- Utah men's basketball team found their rhythm in the second half to rout the visiting UTSA Roadrunners 91-70 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Tuesday night.
The victory moves Utah to 9-2 on the season (2-0 Pac-12) to make it the first time its opened a season with that mark since 2019-20. In addition, it was also Utah's fifth victory this season by a margin of at least 20 – the first time it has happened since the 2014-15 campaign.
Tuesday's game started a bit slow for the Utes, but a 9-0 run capped off by a two-handed slam from
Keba Keita on the dish from
Rollie Worster put Utah on top 18-6. However, UTSA didn't back down and reeled off a 22-4 run to take the 28-22 lead. That lead was short-lived though as Utah's veterans stepped up to put the Utes back on top 29-28 before heading into the locker room on top 39-34.
Utah came out of the locker room in the second half much more poised and hit UTSA (5-5) with an 11-1 blitzkrieg that forced a Roadrunner timeout (17:09). The onslaught continued for Utah as it attacked the rack and knocked down mid-range after mid-range to extend its lead to 64-41 by the 11:52 media break thanks to the 25-7 run.
Branden Carlson scored 17 of his 27 career-high points in the second-frame, before finishing 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line with eight rebounds and four blocks. The last Ute player to record at least those minimums was Luke Nevill vs. Wyoming on Jan. 3, 2009, with 29 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks – Andrew Bogut also met that criteria during his time on The Hill.
Marco Anthony closed out the night with his first double-double of the season scoring 16 points with 10 rebounds (both season-highs) and four assists.
Gabe Madsen also chipped in with 16 points of his own to go with four rebounds, but had to earn his points in the paint, going 5-of-7 from two-point range.
Lazar Stefanovic rounded out the double-digit list for Utah with 10 points while Worster was once again on triple-double watch. The junior point guard closed out the night with seven points, six rebounds and a career-high tying nine assists.
