PROVO, Utah – The #RV/-- Utah men's basketball team fell short Saturday afternoon inside the Marriott Center, dropping a 75-66 decision to in-state rival BYU to snap its five-game win-streak.
Like the 262 other rivalry games between the two storied rivals, it was a back-and-forth heavyweight battle all game. Neither team took command at any point in the first half with both teams struggling on the offensive end. The Cougars went ahead at the first media break but Utah took over at the under-12 (16-15).
Out of the 7:08 media break, the home team went back up after reeling back-to-back triples – which forced a Utah (9-3, 2-0 Pac-12) timeout trailing 26-22 (6:13).
Branden Carlson kept the Utes within striking distance scoring 12 first-half points as they headed into the locker room down 35-31.
Things in the second half were a bit more slowed down with neither team finding any rhythm on offense by the 11:56 mark with Utah trailing 47-42. However, missed opportunities at the rim allowed BYU to go on a 7-2 spurt to push the Utah deficit to 54-44 to force a Utah timeout (8:03).
That lead for BYU (8-5) expanded to 59-44, its largest of the night, out of that break when Rudi Williams scored five-straight points. However, the Runnin' Utes showed fight and slowly clawed back to get within 60-57 with 2:46 to go after 13-1 run that was started by a jumper and NBA range 3-pointer from
Lazar Stefanovic and
Gabe Madsen, respectively.
Williams, who had a game-high 26 points for the Cougars, answered with five-straight points that gave the home team some cushion (65-57). Utah got as close as 67-62 the rest of the way, but couldn't string together enough stops and baskets on the offensive end in the loss.
BY THE NUMBERS
Utah saw BYU turn 14 of its turnovers into a 21-12 edge in points off turnovers … Saturday was just the second time this season the Utes have allowed an opponent to shoot 40-percent or better from the field (.413) … despite having five players in double-figures, the balanced offense wasn't enough with Utah hitting just 14-of-21 from the free throw line and 4-of-20 from beyond the arc … the nine steals Saturday was the most this for Utah this season.
UP NEXT
