FAIRBANKS, Alaska – University of Utah Nordic skier
Abby Jarzin has been named Women's Nordic Skier of the Meet for the RMISA Invitational following last weekend's competition at Birch Hill. Jarzin raced to a fourth-place finish in the 5K freestyle interval start on Feb. 5, before cold temperatures forced the cancellation of the 10K classical events slated for Feb. 6.
Her freestyle result was Jarzin's fourth finish in the top-five this season, which also includes the Utah Invitational freestyle sprints (Jan. 2 – third), Utah Invitational 10K classical (Jan. 6 – fourth) and UAF Invitational 10K freestyle pursuit (Feb. 2 – fifth).
With the Feb. 6 classical races cancelled due to temperatures, Utah was named winner of the RMISA Invitational. Under RMISA rules, in the event of a cancelled race, results from the other discipline are doubled to calculate the final results and ensure an even scoring between alpine and Nordic.
The team victory in the meet once again speaks to the talented and reliable depth Utah boasts on both the alpine and Nordic sides. Even in the absence of 2022 Olympians
Tomas Birkner, Luke Jager, Sophia Laukli, Novie McCabe, Katie Parker and
Katie Vesterstein, the Utes still managed a triumph, and were edged by Colorado by a mere 1.5 points earlier in the week at the UAF Invitational. That was the closest known margin of victory in an NCAA ski meet since 1976.
Jarzin is also among a group of Utes bound for the 2022 FIS Nordic Junior/U23 Cross-Country World Ski Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 22-27 in Lygna, Norway.
