TEMPE, Ariz.- The Utah softball team battled early in their only contest of the day against #20 Duke, but was unable to score the rest of the game after taking an early 2-1 lead after the end of the first and dropped the game, 11-2.
Utah falls to 1-2 with two more games to play at the Kajikawa Classic.
Sophomore pitcher
Mariah Lopez was given the ball today and started off strong retiring the first two batters of the game before giving up solo shot from Duke's Rachel Crabtree.
In the bottom half of the first,
Ellessa Bonstrom got the Utes going picking up her sixth hit of the early season and advancing to second on a wild pitch. In scoring position, junior
Julia Jimenez slapped a single up the middle allowing Bonstrom to challenge the throw and score the first run for Utah while Jimenez ended up at second.
MK Gomez came in to replace Jimenez as a pinch runner and utilized her speed as
Destiny White hit a sac fly out to center field, allowing Gomez to tag and beat the throw to third. A few pitches later, Gomez scored the second and final Utah run on a wild pitch to the back stop. Â
Throughout the rest of the game, the Utes couldn't contain the Blue Devil offense giving up two runs in the second and one in both the third and fourth innings.
Utah threatened again in the bottom of the sixth as Bonstrom reached first for the second time. Jimenez followed and hit another single to move Bonstrom over to third. Just trying to make contact, White did just that grounding out to third and was able to advance Jimenez to second. With two runners in scoring position, the Utes couldn't convert with the next two batters grounding out to end the inning.
Duke put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh scoring sixth runs on four hits to extend the lead, 11-2. Utah didn't go down without a fight as both
Aliya Belarde and
Haley Denning earned their first hits of the season to put runners on first and second with two outs. Bonstrom stepped up to the plate and worked the count but ended up flying out to end the game.
