The First Pitch: Things to Know
- A brand-new chapter in the history of Utah baseball begins on Friday, Feb. 18 as the Utes open up the 2022 season at Loyola Marymount to kick off a three-game series. It marks the start of the ballclub's first season under head coach Gary Henderson.
- These teams met in 2021 during the second weekend of the season. Utah is looking to counter a series sweep by LMU from last year, including the first two games decided by two or fewer runs.
- Henderson, the 2018 NCBWA Coach of the Year, assumed the helm of the program on June 9, 2021 tabbed by director of athletics Mark Harlan. He previously spent the 2020 and '21 seasons with the Utes as associate head coach, working under former longtime head coach Bill Kinneberg.
- The Utes return a core of experienced veterans from '21, while also welcoming one of the largest groups of newcomers in program history—a total of 22 new faces join the Utes this season.
- On the mound, two familiar faces will make the transition from the bullpen to starting roles in 2022. Right-hander and Friday night arm Matthew Sox went 5-2 with a save in his 20 relief appearances last year.
- Also back, and moving to the Saturday spot is Randon Hostert, the Idaho native who was 3-0 out of the 'pen a year ago.
- True freshman Cam Day, the No. 1-ranked high school player in Utah in the Class of 2021, rounds out the rotation with the Sunday role.
A California Flavor
- The LMU series will bring Utah to the home state of 10 Utes identifying California as their point of origin. It's the second-most Utes to hail from a single state, short of only Utah (11).
- Golden State natives on the team include Dane Baker (Corona), Davis Cop (Valencia), Matt Flaharty (Rancho Santa Margarita), Jayden Kiernan (Corona), Aidan Lombardi (Petaluma), Matt Richardson (San Diego), Brock Rudy (Walnut Creek), Dusty Schramm (Fresno), Matthew Sox (La Cañada) and Blake Whiting (Oakdale).
D1Baseball Accolades – Top Pac-12 Prospects in 2022 MLB Draft
- Three Utah pitchers were named by D1Baseball among the Pac-12's top 50 prospects eligible in the 2022 MLB Draft. It includes right-handers Matthew Sox, Randon Hostert and Blake Whiting.
- Sox worked in 20 games out of the bullpen during the 2021 season, finishing 5-2 with a 5.02 ERA and one save. He arrived at Utah as a transfer, spending 2018-20 as a two-way player at Whitman College in Washington.
- Hostert went 3-0 in 14 appearances last year, making three starts. He was previously selected by Texas in the 15th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
- A new addition to the pitching staff, Whiting transferred to the Utes from Salt Lake Community College where he was tabbed 2021 NJCAA Region 18 Relief Pitcher of the Year and All-Region 18 First Team.
Looking Ahead to 2023…
- Along with this year's MLB Draft projections, D1Baseball listed outfield Kai Roberts as the No. 14 prospect in the Pac-12 for the 2023 draft.
- Roberts, an in-state product from Lehi, Utah, started all 50 games last season. He saw time in both the infield and outfield as well as DH.
- His 15-game hitting streak from April 25-May 23 was the longest on the team last season.
D1Baseball Accolades – Pac-12 Impact Freshmen
- Freshman outfielder Jackson Clemett and righty Cam Day rounded out D1Baseball's Preseason Pac-12 accolades as Impact Freshmen.
- Clemett (Calgary, Alberta) is one of two Utes hailing from Canada. He made the 2019 roster for Tournament-12 which was held in the Rogers Center in Toronto, and was invited to the 2020 New Balance Future Stars Series at Fenway Park.
- Day, the No. 1-ranked player in Utah in the Class of 2021, was one of the most decorated high school players in the state in recent memory. He logged a 11-1 record as a senior for Layton High School, tossing 76.1 innings with 133 strikeouts against only nine walks and a 0.40 ERA. Deseret News awarded Day its 6A Baseball Player of Year honor.
