KEYSTONE, Colo. – Utah's
Wilhelm Normannseth won the men's slalom—his first collegiate victory—and the Utes had three top-10 finishers in both the men's and women's races as the program clinched the Denver Invitational on Monday at Keystone Resort.
The alpine-only meet finished with Utah atop the team standings at 332 points, a 19-point cushion on Westminster in second place. Competition in the meet began this past Friday with the giant slalom at Copper Mountain, then turned to Keystone Resort for today's slalom racing.
Normannseth, who won Monday's first run with a time of 57.93 seconds, came back on his second trip down the hill clocking a 58-second mark which was fifth-fastest in that run.
Jeremy Mathers placed fourth on the day, helped by a second run that was third-best in the field.
Gustav Vøllo closed out the men's scoring for Utah and ensured all three scorers had top-10 performances.
Joachim Lien wrapped it up on the men's side in 12
th.
Mathers' top-five was the second of his collegiate career, both in slalom, with the other coming at the Montana State Invitational.
Sona Moravcikova just missed the podium in the women's race finishing fourth, and
Katie Vesterstein took fifth in her third race since returning from the Winter Olympics.
Kaja Norbye, who took bronze in Friday's GS, was 10
th in the slalom.
Katie Parker, also continuing her return from the Olympics, took 16
th and
Michelle Kervén closed out the day with a top-20 effort.
Moravcikova's finish was her fourth top-five this season and best collegiate slalom performance since 2019. Vesterstein was back in the top five for the second time this season, the last at the Utah Invitational in slalom. All but one of Norbye's seven finishes as a Ute have landed in the top-10.
Utah now turns its focus to the 2022 RMISA Championships, which will double as the NCAA West Regional. The event is scheduled for Feb. 23-26 and begins with the giant slalom on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Mount Warner in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
