STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Utah ski team swept the women's podium in the 5K classical race, and the Utes have a 67-point lead at the top of the standings entering the final day of the RMISA Championships, following 5/10K classic races on Friday at Howelsen Hill.
Along with today's Nordic races, there was also a separate RMISA qualifier in slalom. This slalom was not scored as part of the RMISA Championships as it serves only as a qualifier, thus no team scores were kept.
Novie McCabe,
Sophia Laukli and
Julia Richter were the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 finishers in the women's classic race to lead the field, and
Karianne Dengerud tabbed ninth to ensure four Utes in the top-10. It was especially a noteworthy result for both Laukli and McCabe, racing their first college events since returning from the Winter Olympics.
Fellow Olympics returnee
Luke Jager earned bronze in the men's 10K classic, and was trailed in fourth place by
Bjørn Riksaasen.
"The alpine team gave us a good lead going into the Nordic events, and today they came out firing," said director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt. "The men were close to the top with Luke in third and Bjorn in fourth. We are short a bit right now, since we have four men in Norway at the World Junior and U23 Championships. That hurt us in the team points standings here. But, it was super nice to have Novie and Sophia back from the Olympics. Even though they just retuned, they both skied an amazing race. Julia once again showed that she is one of the best classical college skiers in the country. It was amazing to get another sweep for the women."
Ezra Smith wrapped up the Utes' day on the women's side in 12
th place.
McCabe won for the second time this season and seventh in her career, Laukli hit the podium for the third time in her three Utah races and Richter had her second top-three effort of the season, 14
th of her career.
The 2022 RMISA Championships serve as the NCAA West Regional, and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 26 with freestyle racing.
In slalom,
Wilhelm Normannseth won the men's race,
Joachim Lien was fourth and
Jeremy Mathers took eighth. Normannseth (second) and Lien (fourth) had two of the fastest five runs in the morning, and Normannseth's second run ranked fifth-fastest in the field.
Kaja Norbye was the leading Ute in the women's slalom in fourth,
Katie Parker took sixth and
Michelle Kervén was ninth.
Katie Vesterstein finished 23
rd but posted the second-fastest opening run, with Norbye the fifth-fastest in the morning. Kervén
won the second run to vault her into the top-10, and Parker's second run was fifth-fastest.
