CORVALLIS, Ore. – Utah softball (26-26, 8-14) traded blows with Oregon State (32-18, 8-14) on Thursday night, falling to the Beavers in the 10th-inning 8-7.
Sydney Sandez entered in relief for starter
Mariah Lopez after giving up five runs off four hits, which included back-to-back solo homers in the first and a three-run home run in the third that chased Lopez out of the game after striking out three in 2.1 innings pitched. Despite picking up the loss, Sandez had a strong outing in the circle throwing 7.1 innings and held the Beavers scoreless for six consecutive while striking out three to reach the century mark in strikeouts for the first time in her career.
Ellessa Bonstrom and
Aliya Belarde paced the Utes at the dish, each having a multi-hit game going 2-for-5 as Bonstrom drove in two runs for her 13th multi-RBI performance of the year.
Halle Morris collected the third and final RBI of the night, coming through in the clutch in the 10th-inning to score the go-ahead run and an error by the Beaver right fielder would plate another to take a two-run lead late in the game.
Haley Denning and
Kendall Lundberg also found a hit in the contest as
Sophie Jacquez started the busy inning in the 10th, roping a hit off the left field wall for her third triple of the season.
Utah moves to an even .500 (26-26) with two games left on the schedule, needing a win in either of them to keep their post season aspirations alive.
Final: Beavers 8, Utes 7
Belarde reached safely after a battle with the pitcher hitting a soft dribbler towards second and legging it out for the infield single to start the game. Denning followed dropping a sacrifice bunt to move Belarde into scoring position, but a groundout and strikeout followed to hold the Utes off the scoreboard in the opening frame.
The lefty Lopez stepped into the circle for the Utes and picked up the first two outs quickly, lining and grounding out a pair of Beavers to start the bottom of the first. Battling against the three-spot of the Oregon State lineup, Lopez loaded the count but gave up a solo homer to left field and the very next pitch would give up another solo shot to straight away center to give the Beavers the early 2-0 lead.
It was a quiet second for the Utes being sat down in order as Lopez returned to the circle and bounced back in a loud way, picking up her first three strikeouts of the game striking out the side.
Utah went straight to work in the top half of the third, scoring three runs off two hits and induced a throwing error by the Beaver pitcher. Catcher
Katie Faulk led off for Utah in the third and drew a walk to get aboard as
CC Cook entered for Faulk as a pinch runner. The second Utah sacrifice bunt of the game was laid down by
Shelbi Ortiz to move Cook over to second as Belarde picked up her second hit of the game, a bunt single that caused confusion for the defense leaving second base wide open for the taking. With runners on the pond, Denning caused a throwing error by the pitcher to score Cook and advance to second.
Bonstrom then singled through the left side to score Belarde, pushing Denning to third and caught Oregon State sleeping again advancing to second. Denning was thrown out at home off a fielder's choice by Jimenez for the second out of the inning. Trickery on the base paths ensued as Jimenez took off towards second drawing a throw down and hitting the breaks to allow Bonstrom to score and return to first safely. A strikeout followed to end the busy third as the Utes charged back to take the lead, 3-2.
The Beavers would respond in their half of the third, taking back the lead off a three-run home run that ended Lopez's outing and give Oregon State the 5-3 advantage. Sandez took over for Lopez on the mound, fouling out and striking out her first batters of the evening to get the Utes out of the third.
Utah was held quite in the fourth and fifth innings as Denning found her first hit in the fifth with two away. A strikeout followed to leave the third Ute on base as Sandez faced one more than the minimum in the fourth and turned away the beavers in the fifth to hold Oregon State off the scoreboard.
Jimenez led off the sixth drawing a walk but would be putout at second off a fielder's choice by Morris and a groundout followed to keep the Utes scoreless. After recording the first out of the bottom of the frame, Sandez gave up a single up the middle and closed the door on the Beavers flashing some leather to snag a line drive out the air and throw over to first for the double play.
Down to their final three outs,
Elicia Espinosa recorded the first out pinch hitting for Faulk.
Sophie Jacquez then pinch hit for Ortiz and roped a shot off the wall in left for the triple. A groundout by Belarde picked up the second out for the Beavers, but a costly error by the second baseman would allow Denning to reach first and score Jacquez to bring the Utes within one. Denning wasted no time swiping her Pac-12 leading 21st bag of the season and Bonstrom secured her 13th multi-hit performance dropping a blooper into shallow right field as Denning was speeding around third to tie the game.
Sandez retired Oregon State in order, collecting her second strikeout of the game to send the contest into extra-innings. Lundberg found her first hit with two outs in the eighth as a groundout followed to end the frame.
The first Beaver batter grounded out to Belarde to start the bottom of the eighth and an intentional walk ensued to set the Utes up for the classic five-four-three double play to send the game into the ninth.
All three Utes were fanned in the top of the ninth and Sandez sat down Oregon State in order in their half of the ninth, crossing the century mark in strikeouts for the first time in her career as the game entered the 10th.
With one out in the inning and runners on first and second, Morris came through in the clutch once again hitting a shot down the right field line to score Jimenez from second and another error by the Beavers scored pinch runner
MK Gomez from first to take the lead, 7-5.
Denning flashed some leather catching a hard-hit line drive out of the air for the first out and Ortiz tracked down a foul ball down the left field line for the second out. A pair of singles would follow to put a Beaver in scoring position and bring up the winning run to the plate. Utah elected to intentionally walk Oregon State's Frankie Hammoude to load the bases and the following batter hit a triple to plate all three runners and walk-off the game.
