What a weekend we have in front of us! We have our last home series with Washington and postseason play is very much within reach. Win three of the next six and we should be in.
Our seniors have graduated and we are peaking as a team. The sun is out and without any school obligations we get to simply focus on the last few games in front of us.
This year we have talked a lot with the team about being relentless. It will be on the back of my shirt today and when our team brings that, we are one of the toughest teams in the country to beat.
I believe in this group. I believe they have all the pieces to not only get a postseason bid, but to make a run in the tournament.
Last weekend we competed relentlessly every pitch. We lost 1-0 on day 1, then 2-0 on day 2. On the third day at UCLA, we played the best "complete" game I've seen us have all year. We won 8-0 and pitching, hitting, and defense were all on point. Plus, all the little things that go in between those things that can help you win games. Like baserunning and two-out RBI's, perfect steal throws, outfield assists, etc. Those efforts allowed us to run rule one of the top teams in the country at their home field and in shutout fashion.
So, believing this group can do it isn't hard. I've seen them do it throughout the year. What's hard is bringing it every pitch in every game we have left on our schedule, which is six games. Being relentless every pitch whether we are executing or not, whether we are feeling good or not, or whether we are winning or not.
I coached for a long time with a fantastic person name Maggie. One of her favorite things to say was "the game doesn't care." It doesn't care if you were 0-for-3 yesterday. The game doesn't care that you pitched well against them the last time you played them. The game doesn't care if you are up five or down five. The game doesn't care that you run ruled UCLA on Sunday. The game is to be played pitch by pitch. That's all it cares about. It doesn't remember all that other stuff.
So that's the plan, being relentless for every pitch until the end. Until the end of the at bat, until the end of the inning, until the end of the game, until the end of the weekend, until the end of the season, until the end of the postseason tournament.
Relentless. One pitch at a time.
Come watch us this weekend. Come cheer extra loud for our graduates who have accomplished so, so, so much over their time as a student athlete. We will honor the four who are finished with their eligibility after our game Sunday, so stick around for that if you can.
See you at the field!
