LOS ANGELES –
Holly Waxman claimed third place in the women's 1m final and
Luke McDivitt earned a fourth-place finish in the men's platform on Sunday as the University of Utah diving team competed on the final day of the UCLA Diving Invite, which was held at the Spieker Aquatic Complex.
"We had a strong finish to a tough meet," said diving coach
Richard Marschner. "We had a few people finish in positions that would advance to NCAAs if they finish this way at zones, so it was encouraging to see that. Thankfully, we have a week off from competing and traveling, so we will use that time to fine tune some things and get ready for Pac-12's and zones."
Waxman got her day started with an excellent performance in prelims that garnered her 293.40 points and put her in second place.
Kathryn Grant's efforts in prelims gained her a score of 266.95 and put her in 11th and
Lexi Mills totaled 255.00 points, allowing both divers to join Waxman in the 1m final. The work of Waxman and Grant also surpassed the NCAA Championship qualifying benchmark.
McDivitt secured a spot in the men's platform final with a mark of 314.25 that placed him sixth.
Ben Smyth was only a few spots behind his teammate with a score of 297.35 that put him eighth and
Jenner Pennock's point total of 268.80 slotted him 12th.
In the women's final, Waxman put together another strong showing, collecting 284.70 points for a total of 578.10, which allowed her to finish the afternoon in third. Grant ended the day in 13th, while Mills took 18th.
McDivitt improved by more than 40 points in the final, piling up 355.15 points and that effort moved him up to grab fourth place with a score of 669.40. Pennock finished the men's final in 12
th. McDivitt's scores in the prelims and the final both reached the NCAA Championship standard.
