THIS WEEK
After crafting their best performance of the fall, the University of Utah men's golf team will be aiming to continue improving before packing away their clubs for the winter, as the Utes travel to Stockton, Calif., the site of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, which will be held Monday through Wednesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
The Utes last participated in this event in the fall of 2021 and the team's best score was posted by then-sophomore
Javier Barcos, who finished 13-under and in third place. His 54-hole score of 200 stands as the second-lowest on record at Utah, surpassed only by his mark of 199 earlier that season at the Notre Dame Collegiate. Just a few spots behind Barcos in Stockton was teammate Blake Tomlinson, who ended the competition 8-under and tied for seventh. Utah's team score of 22-under went into the record book as fifth-best in school history.
This will be the ninth time in the last 10 seasons the University of the Pacific has put on this tournament, with the 2020-21 campaign being the only exception. The Tigers tied for 11th at the 2022 Pacific Invite, which was won by Grand Canyon University.
UTAH LINE-UP
The Utes will by relying on a lineup that will consist of Barcos,
Davis Johnson,
Braxton Watts,
Brandon Robison and
Sergio Jimenez with
Peter Jung playing as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS: Head Coach Garrett Clegg
"It's amazing that we are at the end of our fall season," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "I feel like last week we had a good event and got a little bit of momentum. It will be a good to see how this group performs, especially Braxton and Brandon after having a week at home to work on their golf games."
THE FIELD
There will be 17 teams vying for the tournament title, with GCU and Pac-12 rival Washington State among them. The rest of the field, along with Utah, will consist of Loyola Maramount, Nevada, Fresno State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, CSUN, Utah Valley, Utah Tech, Cal Baptist, Sacramento State and Seattle.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah's strongest performance of the fall so far was fueled by excellent showings from Barcos and
Davis Johnson, who matched his highest finish as a member of Utah's lineup.
Barcos recorded the 10th top 10 finish of his collegiate career at the Oregon State Invitational, making him only the fourth Ute in program history to reach that benchmark, and it marked the second time he's posted consecutive top 10 outings. The senior Spaniard logged 43 pars, tied for the most by any player in Corvallis, and finished 1-over, tying him for sixth. He played his best golf in the competition's second round, carding a 2-under 69.
Johnson tied for 14th after 54 holes that included a second round 71, which moved him 20 spots up the leaderboard. The sophomore was at his best on the back-nine at the OSU Invitational, where he was 3-under across all three rounds and his final 18-hole score of 2-over allowed him to climb over a few more golfers into the top 15. Through three tournaments so far in 2023-24, Johnson's stroke average of 71.3 is tied for tops on the roster.
As a team, the Utes shook off a slow start and progressed up the rankings to finish in a tie for fourth and their score of 288 was third-best out of 14 teams during the tournament's second round.
