SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Volleyball closed out a four-game home stand with a loss against USC on Sunday afternoon (25-21, 20-25, 24-26, 21-25). The Utes had three players with double-digit kills and seven different Utes collected at least one block.

Utah shined at the net defensively as the Utes tallied their most blocks since racking up 18 against Cal Poly on Aug. 31, 2019. Emrie Sataula was a brick wall at the net as she totaled eight blocks, including two solo blocks.
Allie Olsen added seven blocks of her own and
Viktoria Wahlgren contributed five to tie her career high. Both
Kamryn Gibadlo and
Amelia Van Der Werff tallied four blocks of their own. Wahlgren ran the Utah offense as she piled up 46 assists against the Trojans, tying the second-most of her career.

Lauren Jardine led Utah offensively with 14 kills, the most since racking up 17 kills against Cal earlier this season. Gibadlo led the team with a .333 hitting percentage and contributed 13 of her own kills to add her 13th match with at least ten kills this season. The freshman recorded 24 total kills this weekend against both UCLA and USC. Satuala continued her strong season, capturing her seventh match of at least ten kills over the last eleven matches. Satuala added 11 kills in 25 total attempts.
Vanessa Ramirez and
Kamry Bailey led the back row as they recorded 14 digs and 12 digs respectively.

The first set began deadlocked 5-5 as neither team could find a lead. Following the first 10 points out of the game, Wahlgren collected three consecutive service aces to give Utah a three-point lead before Jardine collected her first kill to close out a 5-0 run. The Trojans responded with a pair of points, but Utah struck with four consecutive points with kills from Olsen and Gibadlo to extend the lead, 13-7. Utah maintained its cushion later into the set as kills from Gibadlo and Wahlgren gave the Utes their largest lead, 18-13. USC came storming back and took the lead, 21-20 after winning eight of the ten points during the stretch. The Utes responded by taking five consecutive points as Olsen and Gibadlo set up the first set point. A block from Van Der Werff and Olsen slammed the door and gave the Utes the first set. Utah never gave up the lead in the first set while hitting .222 with four aces.

The Trojans started strong in the second set, jumping out to a 15-6 start. Utah responded with a 5-2 run using both offensive and defensive efforts. A pair of kills from Gibadlo followed by a solo block and a block from Olsen and Wahlgren cut the deficit to to six. Both teams matched a trio of two-consecutive points to maintain the USC lead, 21-15. Utah put a rally together late to cut the Trojans' lead down to four points but an attack error from the Utes concluded the set.

Utah's offense started the third set red-hot, collecting nine kills in as many points. Leading 9-8, the Utes won the next three of four points and jumped out to a three-point lead. USC responded with a 6-1 run to take the lead, 15-13. Jardine and Satuala aided a comeback with a kill for each player and tied the set, 16-16. The Trojans stole the next two points, but an extended Utah run put the Utes back in the driver's seat. Olsen began the rally with a kill followed by two electric connections by Van Der Werff and a kill from Jardine. Wahlgren finished off a 6-0 run with a service ace to stretch Utah's lead, 22-18. USC would go on to win eight of the next ten points and take a 2-1 set advantage.

The fourth set began with the Trojans in charge, 4-1. Utah responded winning four of the next five points with help from Jardine, Wahlgren, and Satuala blocking at the net while Jardine collected a kill. Both teams would remain neck-and-neck as Olsen added a kill to shrink the USC deficit to 9-8. USC would go on a deep run to increase its lead up to seven points and make the score 17-10. Following a USC timeout, Jardine and Satuala tallied a kill and an ace from Ramirez put the Utes back into striking position. Both teams would trade a pair of points each and an attack error would shrink the lead down to 23-19. Utah managed to win the next two points, but the Trojans closed out the match with a kill. The Utes hit at a clip of .345 in the final set only recording two errors with 12 kills.

Utah hits the road to start a four-game road trip, beginning in Eugene, Ore., for a matchup with the #9 Oregon Ducks on Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. MT and later traveling to Corvallis, Ore., to face the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. MT. The match with Oregon will be broadcast on the Oregon live stream while Sunday's match with Oregon State will be available to watch on Pac-12 Mountain.
