SALT LAKE CITY – The field and schedule for the 2024 Puerto Vallarta Challenge has been officially announced the University of Utah softball team, fresh off the sixth Women's College World Series in program history, will be making the trip south for five games in Mexico.
Session one of the challenge will take place from Feb. 8 – 11, while the Utes will be part of session two, which is scheduled for Feb. 14-18 at Nancy Almaraz Field in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.
Utah's four-day stay will begin with two contests on the 15th, starting at 3 p.m. CT (2 p.m. MT), when they take on the Auburn Tigers, followed by an 8:30 p.m. date with the South Carolina Gamecocks. One day later, the Utes will square off with the Clemson Tigers at 6 p.m. CT and on the 17th, they'll be pitted against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 6 p.m. CT. The Utes will then play in the final game of the challenge on the 18th, tangling with the UC San Diego Tritons.
Three of the teams the Utes face in Puerto Vallarta reached the NCAA Tournament in 2023, with Clemson reaching NCAA Super Regionals, while Auburn and South Carolina both made it the regional final. Utah's clash with Clemson will represent the first time the programs have ever met, while Auburn hasn't been on the Utes' schedule since 2007, Mississippi State since 2005 and South Carolina since 1996. The Utes did visit San Diego in 2023 and earned two wins over the Tritons.
The last time the Utes participated in this event was in 2020 and they got off to a great start by earning a win over Ole Miss before suffering narrow defeats to a pair of ranked squads and also taking the field against the Mexican National Team.
