SALT LAKE CITY – Just days after finishing off a busy week that saw some student-athletes compete in Colorado and others in Texas, the University of Utah swimming and diving team will take on another challenge in form of a home meet against the Arizona State Sun Devils that will get underway on Monday at 11 a.m. inside the Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.
Monday's meeting will be the first meet between the Utes and the Sun Devils since the fall of 2019, when ASU collected a pair of victories in Salt Lake City. The last time a Utah squad claimed a win over the Sun Devils came in the form of a 174.5-119.5 win for the men's side in the spring of 2015. On that day, the Utes got three first-place swims from Bence Kiraly and a pair of victories courtesy of Jacob Crayne on the boards.
In the Pool
Utah's eventful week included a number of noteworthy swims, several of which came from
Jaek Horner. Horner logged an Olympic Trials cut in the 100 meter breaststroke on Thursday morning, then spent the afternoon smashing the school record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 51.32 that also earned him first place. One day later, Horner reset another Utah record and posted an NCAA Championships B Qualifying time in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 1:53.37.
Brandon Miller recorded an NCAA B time of his own on Friday in the 200 back, finishing in 1:42.75, and this came one day after Miller posted two Olympic Trial cuts, first in the 400 IM, followed by another in the 100 back. Miller's time of 55.66 in the latter race also broke the pool record at the Texas A&M Natatorium.
Norah Hay,
Summer Stanfield,
Evan VanBrocklin and
Jakub Walter left College Station with NCAA qualifying times to their credit as well.
On the Boards
In less than a month of competition during her freshman season in Utah,
Emilia Nilsson Garip has done nothing but break records for the Utes and she continued that trend in the Lone Star State. On day one of the A&M Invitational, she piled up 375.65 points in the 3m to shatter a program best that stood for nearly 20 years. Only 24 hours later, Nilsson Garip was on the 1m, crafting a score of 326.30 points that put her at the top of Utah's all-time leaderboard again.
No diver racked up more points in College Station than Utah's
Holly Waxman, who recorded a trio of top three finishes, as well as three NCAA Championship Qualifying marks. Waxman placed third in the 1m and 3m and was even better on the platform, putting up a personal-best of 280.95 that earned her second place.
Jake Suchowski also set a personal-best on the platform on Friday and
Elias Petersen took the opportunity to fine tune a new diving list, logging solid scores on the 1m and 3m.
