Award comes after 3-0 week that included 14 1/3 scoreless innings
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released the first edition of its weekly awards on Tuesday and Utah pitcher Mariah Lopez earned the title of Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week.
Lopez started her season by winning each of her first three starts without allowing a run, racking up 21 strikeouts while not walking a batter and scattering five hits in 14.1 innings of work. She struck out eight Stonehill batters and allowed one hit over four innings in her season debut, then fanned another eight batters in 5.1 innings and surrendered two hits against Northern Colorado. The junior hurler capped off the week with five more shutout innings with five punchouts against UC San Diego.
This is the first pitcher of week award Lopez has ever received and she is first Utah pitcher to receive a weekly award since 2017, when Miranda Viramontes was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.
