SAN FRANCISCO – Catcher
Cameron Gurney was 3-for-3 and walked once in his collegiate debut, but ultimately the Utah baseball team was held to just a pair of runs as the Utes were topped by San Francisco, 6-2, on Sunday at Benedetti Diamond.
The Utes (1-2) will look to split the four-game series with the final matchup set for 2 p.m. MT on Monday.
Third baseman
Jake Gish added a 2-for-4 day, including an RBI double in the ninth inning. Designated hitter
TJ Clarkson, who came on to pitch the final two innings, drove in Utah's first run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Clarkson also walked and has now reached base in eight consecutive games dating back to the 2022 season.
USF broke the ice in the bottom of the third, when Harris Williams III hit a grounder to short, sending Patrick Keighran off from third base and beating the throw home for the early lead. The Dons added another run in their half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth Utah got on the board, halving the deficit.
Kai Roberts led off with a double to left center, taking third when
Landon Frei put a base hit into right. Clarkson then skied a fly ball to center field, deep enough for Roberts to tag up and score on the sacrifice fly.
The Dons answered right away with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning, using three hits including a two-run double—moving the score to 5-1 in favor of the home club. USF added one more tally in the seventh.
Clarkson struck out the side in the eighth to keep the score at 6-1 at that time.
With the Utes looking to rally and the bottom of the lineup due in the ninth,
Elijha Hammill worked a one-out walk, moved into scoring position on a free pass to Gurney then scored when Gish put a double just inside the left field foul line. But that would be all for the Utes as San Francisco was able to close it out from there.
Starting pitcher
Jaden Harris (0-1) went 4.2 innings for Utah in the loss, allowing two runs on four hits. Southpaw
Ernie Lugo made his Utah debut in relief of Harris, going 1.1 innings before Clarkson took the Utes home for the final two innings of work. Each Utah pitcher had three strikeouts, while Harris and Lugo each walked a batter.
