SAN FRANCISCO – The Utah baseball team fell by a 3-0 score to San Francisco on Monday at Benedetti Diamond.
Utah (1-3) now turns its attention to the 2023 Kleberg Bank College Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The tournament begins on Friday, Feb. 24 with a 1 p.m. MT game against Houston and played at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Center fielder
Karson Bodily contributed his first double as a Ute in the loss, while catcher
Davis Cop, third baseman
Jake Gish and designated hitter
Cameron Gurney each singled.
Southpaw
Bryson Van Sickle (0-1) got the start, working five innings of two-run ball, striking out five Dons against two walks.
Merit Jones and
Micah Ashman also pitched out of the bullpen for Utah.
USF got on the board in the opening inning with a walk followed by back-to-back doubles, the last driving in two runs. But Van Sickle quickly put that sequence behind him, coming back with a strikeout and a successful pickoff move to second base, getting out of the inning without further damage.
The 2-0 lead for the Dons remained until the sixth inning, when the home club added another run on a wild pitch.
The Utes had runners in scoring position in five different innings, but San Francisco countered with a lockdown effort on the mound and defensively and didn't allow Utah to get across the plate.
