The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah baseball team heads to Texas this weekend for the first of back-to-back trips to the Lone Star State. The Utes will be in action at the 2023 Kleberg Bank College Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from February 24-26; the trip then concludes with a morning tilt on February 27 against the host Islanders.
- Utah's schedule for the Kleberg Bank College Classic includes Houston (Feb. 24), Incarnate Word (Feb. 25) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Feb. 26), with all three games played at Whataburger Park. The February 27 game against the Islanders is not part of the tournament and will be played at Chapman Field.
- The first-ever recorded meetings against Houston and Incarnate Word await the Utes. Utah's last meeting with a member of the American Athletic Conference was a March 1, 2019 setback at East Carolina, a 7-6 result in 10 innings.
- Utah last played a Southland Conference team (home of UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) when the Utes defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the 2020 Kleberg Bank College Classic. Utah's only other meeting with A&M-Corpus Christi came in 2012, with that game going to the Islanders.
- Although the Utes fell short of reaching the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament, the relatively young club showed signs of promise for the future. Utah (26) had a nine-win improvement from the previous season, set Pac-12 era program records in seven offensive categories and had the program's first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner in first baseman Alex Baeza.
- Returning catcher/infielder Davis Cop, plus infielder Landon Frei, were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention team last season. Baeza was additionally named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team.
- Cop began the 2023 season by being placed on the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team, as well.
Recap in a Minute
- Utah is looking to bounce back following a four-game series at San Francisco to begin the 2023 season. The Utes triumphed in the season opener by an 11-9 score, but USF countered with wins in the final three games of the series.
- Playing in his first game as a Ute last Friday, Elijha Hammill finished 4-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored and was a double short of the cycle. Hammill had a two-run single and later scored in an eight-run first inning for Utah, homered in the third and hit his first triple in the fifth inning.
- The Utah pitching staff racked up 45 strikeouts on the weekend against just seven walks, also picking off four runners. The starters in particular combined for a 3.86 ERA for the series, while Zac McCleve earned his 10th career save in the season opener.
On Deck
The Utes are back in Texas next weekend to visit UTSA for a three-game series (March 3-5).
