ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
Luke Jager's victory highlighted four Utes in the top-eight of the men's freestyle sprints and
Novie McCabe added a silver medal on the women's side as the Utah Ski Team began the Alaska Anchorage Invitational on Monday at Kincaid Park.
The Utes lead the team standings with 187 points and are ahead of Colorado, which sits 18 points behind at 169 after Monday's races.
"It was a beautiful day in Anchorage to kick off our week in Alaska," said head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick. "The track was buffed out today and the team skied great. As with any sprint day, we had some luck in our favor, and some that went the other way, but I think everyone learned something to carry forward into the upcoming races. I'm psyched where we are as a team as we head into the mass start tomorrow!"
Tom Mancini was just short of the podium with a fourth-place effort in the men's race, followed right behind him by
Walker Hall.
Noel Keeffe took eighth.
Key points for Utah in the women's race were led by McCabe on the podium in second place and followed up with
Karianne Dengerud in fourth and
Celine Mayer placing 13
th.
Ezra Smith also contributed a top-15 finish.
The Utes continue the Alaska Anchorage Invitational on Tuesday both with alpine and Nordic races. The alpine squad will race in giant slalom while the Nordic schedule features 10K classic races. The meet then wraps on Thursday in slalom.
There's a bit of overlap to the schedule this week with the RMISA Championships also going on. Alpine competition will take place on Wednesday (giant slalom) and Friday (slalom), ahead of Nordic races on Friday (10K freestyle) and Saturday (20K classic).
