Alpine – Normannseth and Kervén Ski to Podium
In the final alpine races of the regular season,
Wilhelm Normannseth won the men's slalom and Michelle Kerven posted a runner-up effort on the women's side at Alyeska Resort.
"The conditions were a little tougher today," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "Michelle was a rockstar again. We were a little depleted on the women's side and had some hiking. But she really performed and just continues to impress this year. On the guys' side, Willy was so athletic and continues to ski so well. To win in the amount he has this year has been incredible. Bjorn's finish shows his maturity in what's doing out there. All in all, a decent day and a battle for us, a lot of happy seniors. Some tears, but I'm proud of the whole crew. An emotional day, but the crew did well."
Normannseth (1:28.26) was aided by a second-place opening run time of 42.18 seconds, adding another top-five trip down the hill in the afternoon to remain atop the field.
Jeremy Mathers, who finished seventh in the race (1:29.46), had a top-five run in the morning as well. Rounding out the scoring for Utah was
Bjorn Brudevoll in ninth place (1:29.68) and
Raphael Lessard was just off the top-10 in 11
th place.
Tomas Birkner, appearing in what is expected to be his final regular season race as a Ute, earned a top-15 finish.
Kervén clocked 41.77 seconds in the morning, sitting third at the break. Her second run of 47.07 seconds was sixth, but there was plenty of shuffling in the rest of the morning top-10 that bumped her up to the silver medal (1:28.84).
Josefine Selvaag returned to action placing 22
nd for Utah (1:33.05) and
Claire Timmermann closed out the scoring for the Utes, clocking a time of 1:52.67 for 33
rd place.
As today marked the final alpine races of the RMISA Championships and regular season, each of the senior student-athletes were recognized and donned senior race bibs. For Utah on the alpine side, the ceremony included
Tomas Birkner,
Bjorn Brudevoll,
Katie Parker,
Josefine Selvaag and
Katie Vesterstein.
Nordic – McCabe Wins Freestyle; Four Men in Top-Eight
Novie McCabe clocked 13:51.3 in the 5K freestyle—about three seconds ahead of Alaska Fairbanks' Mariel Pulles—securing the 16
th win of her collegiate career at Government Peak.
"Today was a solid day for us," said head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick. "No one skied out of their minds, but there were some very solid races across the board. The courses are quite challenging here at Government Peak so there were definitely a few tired bodies out there today. Novie continues to impress with her consistency and dominance. Sixteen victories in her career so far is mind-blowing. We are looking to finish Regionals out on a high note tomorrow!"
Karianne Dengerud contributed a ninth-place result (14:43.2), and
Ezra Smith shared 16
th place (15:04.1).
Celine Mayer also worked into the top-20 on the day.
Utah claimed the Nos. 5-8 spots in the men's race, led by
Luke Jager (26:24.4) in fifth,
Walker Hall (26:29.3) and
Brian Bushey rounding out the scoring in seventh place (26:33.3).
Samuel Hendry was right behind Bushey taking eighth.
