BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Utah Lacrosse team battled till the final seconds of the game today against the No. 16 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, but were unable to close the gap, falling 12-8 on the road.
GAME LEADERS
Junior
MJ McMahon led the Utes in points with a season-high three assists with
Jordan Hyde,
Ryan Stines and
Tyler Bradbury all scoring two goals each. Faceoff specialist and midfielder
Cole Brams secured a team-high six ground balls with 12 faceoff wins while
Joey Boylston and
Nikko DiPonio both notched two caused turnovers.
Goalkeeper
Colin Lenskold also finished the game with 14 saves on 12 goals against for a 54-percent save percentage.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Johns Hopkins would strike first, going up 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game, but the Utes would even things up with two unanswered goals of their own.
Stines would counter first with a shot low to the corner to make it 2-1 with 9:52 on the clock, followed by
Ryan Rogers' first goal of the year. Rogers scored after going one-on-one with his defender with a burst of speed to find the back of the net, making it 2-2 with 7:35 to go.
Stines would score his second goal of the game with 6:57 remaining in the quarter on a heater from 15 yards out to give Utah a one-point lead, but the Blue Jays would score two in a row to end the quarter with a 4-3 advantage.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Hyde would put the Utes up by one after scoring the first two goals of the quarter, starting with his first of the game at the 13:24 mark. Rose found Hyde wide open to the left of the goal to drive it into the back of the net, followed by a goal with 11:10 on the clock after McMahon found him open again across the crease.
Lenskold racked up four big saves in the quarter and nine in the first half, working hard to keep Johns Hopkins out of the cage, but the Blue Jays would end up scoring two unanswered during a Utah scoring drought to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes offense stumbled in the third quarter, unable to find the back of the net for the entirety of the 15-minute period with the Blue Jays taking an 8-5 lead into the final quarter of the game.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Johns Hopkins made it a four-point game with 13:30 to go in the quarter, but the Utes wouldn't give in, cutting it back down to three with a goal from Bradbury on a pump fake at the 10:38 mark.
The Blue Jays would score again to extend things back out to four with 7:30 remaining in the game, but once again, the Utes would answer.
Jared Andreala would cause a turnover on the defensive end of the field with the Utes countering on an assist from
Samuel Cambere and a goal from
Colby Plotts to make it 10-7.
The Utes would make it 11-8 with 4:30 left to play in the game on a laser shot from deep from
Carson Moyer, but it would be Utah's final points of the game, eventually falling 12-8.

The Utes will remain on the east coast, heading to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers on Saturday, March 4. The game will start at 11 a.m. MT and will air on Big Ten+.
