PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Despite homers from
Aliya Belarde and
Karlie Davison, the University of Utah softball team suffered a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, which is being held at the Big League Dreams Sports Park.
This defeat brings an end to Utah's three game win streak and puts their 2023 record at 9-4.
"We dug a hole early in this game and it cost us," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "I was happy with the relief work we had, both Halle and Sarah did a nice job only giving up one run from the 3rd on. We had some quality at-bats in a tough environment and I would have loved for one of our hitters to shoot one in the gap when we loaded the bases.
"Overall, I'm happy with our competitiveness from pitch to pitch. Moving forward, that will be something we will need to find a way to win these big games."
For the second straight year, the Utes scored first against the Sooners and it was Belarde who got the scoring started in the top of the first. On the first pitch she saw, Belarde sent a liner into left that eluded Oklahoma's Riley Boone and rolled all the way to the wall. By the time the Sooners retrieved the ball, Belarde had circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run and a 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma struck back with three runs in their half of the first thanks to a Grace Lyons RBI double and a two-run Tiare Jennings homer and they added six more in the second, keyed by two-run hits from Jocelyn Erickson and Alyssa Brito. From there, the Utes limited the opposition to just one run on two hits.
Sarah Ladd put together 3 1/3 innings of one-run relief work that included scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth.
Utah pushed one run across in the third as a result of a two-out rally that consisted of two singles, a walk and a fielder's choice, then Davison went deep in fourth, rocketing a solo homer over the wall in left-center, but that would be the Utes' final tally of the day.
