SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Ski Team and director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt announced the team's selections for the 2023 NCAA Ski Championships on Tuesday. The championship meet is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, March 8-11, in Lake Placid, New York. St. Lawrence University is the host and will welcome the field to Whiteface Mountain for the alpine races and Mt. Van Hoevenberg for Nordic competition.
Utah was one of four NCAA programs to earn the maximum of 12 selections; it breaks down to three athletes per gender, per discipline. Colorado, Dartmouth and Vermont are the other programs sending a full quota.
On the women's alpine side, the Utes will race
Madison Hoffman,
Michelle Kervén and
Katie Parker. The men include
Bjorn Brudevoll,
Wilhelm Normannseth and
Gustav Vøllo. For Nordic, the women's lineup includes
Sophia Laukli,
Novie McCabe and
Sydney Palmer-Leger, while it'll be
Walker Hall,
Samuel Hendry and
Luke Jager for the men.
Alternates who also qualified for Utah include
Brian Bushey,
Karianne Dengerud,
Noel Keeffe,
Raphael Lessard,
Tom Mancini,
Jeremy Mathers,
Celine Mayer,
Kaja Norbye,
Oliver Parazette,
Ezra Smith and
Claire Timmermann.
Utah has won the last three completed NCAA Championships (2019, '21, '22) and 15 national crowns in program history, and were leading the 2020 event at the time it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At last year's NCAA Championships, which the Utes hosted at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center and Park City Mountain Resort, Utah led the meet from wire-to-wire, collecting 14 All-America accolades and as many podium results across the alpine and Nordic races.
Novie McCabe (5k classic) and
Sophia Laukli (15k freestyle) each claimed individual NCAA titles. It capped a season in which 13 current and former Utah Ski Team student-athletes were named Olympians.
