NEDERLAND, Colo. – Utah's
Madison Hoffman matched her top giant slalom finish as a Ute with a silver medal, while
Gustav Vøllo and
Wilhelm Normannseth finished 3-4 in the men's race as the Utah Ski Team began the alpine portion of the Spencer James Nelson Memorial Colorado Invitational on Thursday at Eldora Mountain Resort. The CU Invitational concludes on Friday with one more giant slalom race.
Utah enters the final day of the meet with 472 points, sitting second in the team standings behind the host Buffaloes (522).
Hoffman's (1:45.85) previous runner-up result in a GS race came at the 2021 Denver Invitational.
Claire Timmermann (1:46.73) had her first top-six result for a collegiate race and
Katie Parker (1:47.61) wrapped up the Utah scoring in 12
th place.
Michelle Kervén took 14
th and
Kaja Norbye 20th, giving Utah five top-20 finishes for the women's race.
"It was super nice to be racing GS again today after the shortened series in Montana," said Hoffman. "The snow was super fun and held up amazing. It felt nice to land on the podium today and I'm super excited for another chance tomorrow."
Women's winner Sara Rask of Denver and Hoffman finished 1-2 in both runs, with Hoffman clocking 52.35 seconds in the opener and 53.50 seconds on her final run.
In the men's race, Vøllo (1:39.50) was fourth in both runs, but some shuffling around him on the back end of the race pushed him up to third place in the final results. Normannseth (1:39.68) just missed the podium and
Bjorn Brudevoll (1:40.49) took 12
th.
Oliver Parazette contributed a 17
th place result and
Tomas Birkner was just off the top-20.
Along with the final day of GS competition at Eldora tomorrow, the Denver Invitational also begins on Friday. Nordic action is slated for Friday (5K freestyle) and Saturday (10K Classic), while back-to-back slalom days will occur on Saturday and Sunday. The Nordic half will take place at Maloit Park in Minturn, Colorado, and the slaloms will be held in Dillon, Colorado, at Loveland Ski Area.
