The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's the first of three meetings with BYU this season as the Utah baseball team heads down I-15 to Provo for a Tuesday night ballgame at Miller Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. MT and the game will be broadcast on BYUtv with Dave McCann (PxP) and Gary Sheide (analyst) on the microphone.
- In addition to Tuesday's matchup, Utah and BYU will converge again at Miller Park on Tuesday, April 18, before concluding the season series in Salt Lake City on May 9 at Smith's Ballpark.
- Last year Utah took two of three from the Cougars after dropping the first meeting of the sides. BYU came out of the March 15 opener at Smith's Ballpark by a 10-3 score, before the Utes earned a 8-7 walk-off win on April 19 and took a 12-7 decision in Provo on May 17.
- The Utes are coming off the team's opening series of Pac-12 Conference play, a three-game set up at Washington. Utah came out with a 3-0 victory in the series finale, thanks in part to freshman starter Merit Jones working into the seventh inning and clutch work out of the bullpen from Bryson Van Sickle, Zac McCleve and Micah Ashman.
- TJ Clarkson, last week's Pac-12 Player of the Week, clubbed his sixth home run of the season during the Sunday victory, while Jayden Kiernan contributed a pair of hits. Cameron Gurney capped off his first three collegiate starts at third base; Gurney has also played catcher and first base in addition to DHing.
- Down to its last out on Saturday and trailing 3-2, Davis Cop was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After a lengthy discussion as to whether Cop was hit or fouled off the pitch, he was awarded first base; unfortunately for Utah, the Huskies hit a two-out walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to take the game by a 4-3 score.
- Following Tuesday's game, the Utes will prepare for their home opener on Friday, March 17 as Gary Henderson's club begins a three-game Pac-12 series with Arizona State at Smith's Ballpark.
- Although the Utes fell short of reaching the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament, the relatively young club showed signs of promise for the future. Utah (26) had a nine-win improvement from the previous season, set Pac-12 era program records in seven offensive categories and had the program's first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner in first baseman Alex Baeza.
